barrel shim
« on: June 17, 2009, 02:31:39 PM »
just got a new to me 500 SW barrel.  It fits perfect on one of my SB2 frames with a .002" shim cut from Brownells shim stock.  I test fit it and have been opening and closing the action and the shim does not seem to move around.  Is it safe to use the rifle without epoxying the shim to the barrel lug?  In case it is important, I will not be using factory 500 ammo, only light reloads comparable to Trapdoor 45-70 loads, maybe a little hotter.

Thanks

Shoot it, check for looseness after shooting frequently, lots of fellas don't permanently install shims, whatever works for ya, it's an easy repair if it falls out or wears. Just an FYI, I put a brass shim in my old H&R 12ga by just wrapping it around the hinge pin when I was a teen about 45yrs ago, it worked that way until I replaced it in '95 so my Dad would have a gun for turkey huntin, he klilled a big ol tom the first year he hunted with it! ;)

I put a beer can shim in one of my Handis well over a year ago, and it's still doing fine without epoxy.  If it gives out, it's a one beer, 5 minute job to replace it.

QUIET PETE!!   :o  I've got Kathie convinced I have to re-shim every time I shoot!   ;D

Yeah, that's a fact ;) ;)  Some ya gotta shim after every couple of shots, those sometimes require glass shims :D ;D :D
