44mag for 357mag???
« on: June 11, 2009, 05:36:20 AM »
i've posted this on other forums, and had pretty much one answer from every one. i tried last night here but kept getting a error message, but now i'm here so i'll post it. i have a friend who wants to trade me out of my ruger sp101 357 mag., he is offering a choice of taurus tracker's 44 mag. he has had the guns for about 6 months, i've had the ruger about two months, he said he's shot only about 200 rounds thru each one, i've shot 50 rounds thru the ruger. he's got two tracker's a 2inch barrel, and a 4inch barrel, he wants my ruger and 100 rounds of ammo for the 2inch barrel tracker, and the ruger and 200 rounds of ammo for the 4inch barrel. he says the reason for trading is he's got two 44's and just want to get a 357 mag. should i trade?, thanks for any help.

There may be some that would argue but for my part unless you want a 44 bad I would never trade a ruger for a taurus anything!

I would not trade a ruger for a taurus either!  If yea want a 44 go buy the one you want or trade something different for it.

Just my opinion, but I wouldn't trade an SP101 for 2 Taurus' (or 3 or 4 for that matter).

No WAY!  I really like my SP101 its tough and likely to last several lifetimes.

no HE-- NO !
but don't take our word , call a local gun shop and ask if they would take either on trade and what they would give . trade in value is the real value , if you sell in a private sale its gravy .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Personally I would not trade.  I look at all the customer service problems that people have printed here.  Silly little things that take Months or longer to get resolved.  The three times I have sent guns back to Ruger.  They fixed them and had them back with in a week.
1- rifle stock cracked after owning it for 15+ years.
2- barrels came apart on over and under- bought used.
3- sent them a Bisley revolver to have it made into a 22 mag.  No Phone call to them, they could not make it a 22 mag but went through the gun and changed out a grip that had a minute hair line crack and replaced the firing pin, sent it back at no charge.
As far as a 357 or 44 mag?
The 357 mag is more versital and ammo is cheap in comparison.  If you are new to handguns Practice!  heck go get a 22 pistol and shoot it till it stops working. I have had a 22 pistol since I was 17 and at last count had over 50,000 rounds through it.  More 22 pistols have een added and sutracted but when ever I am getting ready to either hunt or for a shoot I bring out the 22.
But back to the 357, you can do IDPA or plink with 38 specials and have a wide variety of bullets for home defense and hunting.
There really is no plinking ammo for the 44 mag.  all of the 44 specials are just as expensive as the mag loads.  there are the 44 specials and a couple of home / personal defense rounds out there with the bulk being hunting rounds.
I own a couple of each and I use both quite a bit and reload for the 44 to make practice rounds that are inexpensive and easy to shoot.
Not really sure what you want a 2" 44 for?  My two 44's are a 6" for general use and a 14" for hunting.
The two 357's I have are a 4" N frame and a 6" L frame similar to your GP100.
The 4" and 6" give me the most use for hunting, personal protection, and for the range.

Maybe for a FORD Taurus in great shape with not too many miles. (So you could sell it and buy more Rugers!)
