shotshells for a 32 H&R mag.
« on: June 16, 2009, 01:36:44 PM »
I have read the forms here a lot, but till now now gotten on here.
I find that there are a lot of knowledgeable people on here. I had hoped some one could shed some light on a project that I doing?
I've been trying to load shot shells for the 32 H&R mag. and have had at best fair results.Mosley because of low shot capacity.I would like to load 100+ Gr. of #12 shot.
Sense there are no shot capsules for it, what I was wanting to try was to find a cartridge that would fit in to the 32 cylinder (even if it needed to be fire formed some or swagged down) and go almost to the end of the cylinder.
The other thing that might work would be to find something that would work as a capsule that would be strong enough to hold the shot.
I will appreciate all the Ideas that come this way.

you could try cutting a cardboard wad using a chamfered case mouth . then make a cup by wrapping paper or wax paper around an appropriately sanded dowel and then sealing with wax or even hot glue over a top wad.
I don't know if I'd go smaller than 9 shot though. I have been working on this loading technique for my new air shotgun. ( shot takes a few pellets to be effective on anything bigger than a mouse. I guess 12 would be good for grasshoppers.. LOL

Necking down does not work well in the revolver format. <Please don't respond with the various necked wildcats as it has no bearing here since the cylinder is cut for them> If you say take a .327 fed case and neck it down so it will slide all the way into the cylinder, when you fire the case it will set back against the breech face and the case will expand to fill the gap the moving back has created. you now have a stuck case in a revolver and you cylinder will not revolve. I'd done this so many times in 38, 41, 44, and 45 and just have never found a way to get around it, short of re-chambering the cylinder.

#12 shot works great for just about anything you would shoot with shot loaded revolver, snakes, rats, mice, etc. I've seen a .45 ACP loaded with 170g of #12 drop dove and pigeons like crazy. So many folks poo-poo #12 that I can only assume they either do not have real experience with it or are using it beyond its capacity.

About the only thing I would really suggest for the .32 H&R is a very light load of fast burning pistol powder (bullseye, red-dot, AA#2) a gascheck pressed into the case all the way onto the powder and slightly compressed and see how much shot you can get. You will need to do a little experimentation to figure out what your load will be, but it should work okay.

I used the old cci shotshells in a 22 revolver and sparrows shot with it at 20 feet or so thrashed around quit a bit til I walked up and shot them in the head with a solid. I used to load every other in an old H&R revolver just for that. I am surprised at how well that little air shotgun does with its 9 shot. I wonder if 12 would work as well. I got the 9 shot at a garage sale for a song though. At 20 gr per shell, that will go a long way in the tiny shells b4 I need more though.

There may be two options, depending how patient you are and good with making tiny things in your big man-size fingers!

1).    If gelatin-pill capsules can be "had" in the correct [approximate] diamter, those gelatin capsules will shatter upon firing.  My dad did this very thing making .38Spl snakeloads with gelatin caps - of that right size.

2).    Otherwise take and use a .308-.312 cal gas-check as an over-powder wad under the column of #9 or #10 or whatever size shot yuou have, and use another gas-check for an over-powder wad.  Then crimp it lightly but suffciently.  (#12 shot is also callled "dust").

I would use BullsEye or similar powder, starting about with 2.5-3 grains and working up.  750-800-850 feet per second is all you want and need for velocity.  Whatever you would shoot would be measured in feet.
