I AM NOW RECRUITING
« on: June 16, 2009, 05:10:37 PM »
ATTENTION ALL WOODWORKERS:

I am in need of a "custom" forend for my big gun project.  The idea is to have to wide enough that I can fit two 7/8"x5" one pound recoil reducers in the forend.  One on each side.  I guess I would have to weld it to the barrel?

Anywho, I don't really need it anytime soon, but if you have a great idea of how to do this and still keep it from looking super ugly, PM me, and if it sounds good I will pay you to make it for me when the time comes.

Thanks,
Tyler

Well I am a machinist and I can make actual oil/piston recoil reducers and if you will participate in testing them i could slap a couple together for you at cost.

I don't think it would be outrageous.  What would be the specifications?  What diameter tubing?  Actually for what your getting into I would build it 8 to 12 inches long, 1 1/4 inch in diameter and use a heavy piece of stainless for the piston and design it to weigh 2 pounds or so.  Instead of worrying about fitting it into the forearm just mount it to the barrel with clamps.  Could put a smaller diameter recoil reducer in the stock and this would help with balance.  Actually I am intrigued with the project myself though a standard 3 inch chamber would work for me.

Well I am certainly interested, as I could use both on my 45-120 now to see how much it takes felt recoil down, then I could use them on the big gun as well.  PM me with costs.

Diameter and size really don't matter, the stock hole fits a 7/8" recoil reducer pretty tight, but I could always make it larger.  I think my 45-120 is pretty well balanced, so about equal weights would be good, but the barrel mounted one would be moveable so thats a plus.  Might look a bit unorthodox, but heck the whole gun is.

Well a 3 1/2 inch 20 gauge loaded to 30.000 PSI pushing an over 1000gr. bullet will sort of make your 45-120 seem like a warm memory.  I haven't had a lot of time to think about it but I could use the tube from an extended magazine 12 gauge, machine a piece of stainless to fit say 6 inches long with a pretty good piece of spring letting it travel 4 inches pushing hydraulic fluid back thru a hole around .187 hmmmm.  I can't promise it will jump out of your hands when you pull the trigger but it will be an improvement.  Actually the first one will have to be made so it can be dissasembled to make it possible to experiment with different weight oils and feedback holes.  Spring rate will be a consideration too.  Figure out what the actual recoil will be and I will have something to start with anyway or I could just start out working on the biggest possible setup.  Could end up looking like an over under shotgun.

It'd be a lot simpler to put it on a gun carriage, stand back, and pull a lanyard :D ;) ;D

Seriously, you lunatics have some very good ideas.  Lots of luck with the project.

Pete    How many yards long should that lanyard be. Would helments be a required item?

Does attaching weight to the barrel like this bother anyone else?  I would think the torque would not be good for the barrel or the locking mechanism.  I would much rather see a hollow stock get filled with lead/recoil reducers.  Maybe I am just thinking too much...

I know my recoil reducer will be of no intrest to you but I am gonna put it out there any ways. What I do is set the 45/70 down and pick up the 223 recoil reduced ;D Kurt

Just a side note.
The weight clamped to the barrel will alter the harmonics of the barrel which could/would affect bullet flight.
May be good, may not.

If the bbl is properly bedded and if a clap(s) are used in a consistant manner, I wouldn't see the harmonics posing too much problem.  Consistancy is always the key to shooting anything. From a bow to a howitzer.

Why not just cast a forend out of lead? Recoil reducers and custom wood are nice, but lead is cheap. Maybe a nice flat benchrest type. That way, you don't even have to hold it up...lol
