T/C Encore
« on: March 26, 2009, 09:19:39 AM »
I have an oppotunity to buy a two year old 50 cal. encore, stainless with composite wood grain stock, also has silver Nikon scope with bdc, asking price is 650.00, gun appears to be in good shape, he also is throwing in his accesories.

I think this is a good deal, are there any problem areas these guns have that I should look for?

Thanks Jon

I would go out on a limb here and say that this encore is over priced. We all know that scopes do not bring much value to the retail price of a gun so from that I would say that at 650 it is 150-200 over priced. You can pick them up for 450 used if you look and you can also pick up the frame and barrel seperately and spend 450 + - a couple bucks.

But all in all they are hard to beat for a muzzleloader.

I disagree.  If you break it down like you are saying you will see the stainless frames are bringing close to $300, a used stainless 209x50 barrel usually runs $225-250, That nikkon scope retails for $300 so if you figure half price for being used thats still $150, rings, mounts, stocks, and accessories.  Depending on the accessories he has this could be a great deal.  Without accessories I still think its a good deal.  I guess the price of the same model gun can vary quite a bit by location but around me you can't touch a used encore under $550 any more and that is bare bones with out anything.

Its used, and if you take it to a dealer for trade you will most likely get "$0.00" extra for the scope as most will tell you that the scope does not add to the price of the gun. I know as I have worked for a very large firearm dealer and this is common practice in reguards to a scope. Now if the scope is a Vari XIII or some other high dollar scope that the dealer can pull off and sell it seperately you might get a bone or 2 extra.

Even if you take in a NEW IN BOX gun to a dealer you will only get about 25-30% off the dealers cost on the same gun on a dealer purchase or trade.

The last stainless Encore frame that I bought was 250 and the barrel was 225 both were in great condition, The barrel was a 209x50 and came with a scope rings and base and a forearm for the $225.  plus shipping, The scope was a New pro series Simmons (not a high dollar scope but worth a good 100 bucks retail in a store) but I purchased the barrel as a barrel and without price concideration for the scope and forearm and I bought the barrel from a dealer.

+1, Exactly.   I have an encore with a 209x50 barrel that I bought used off of Ebay, back when you could.  I also put that Nikon BDC 250 scope on it.  You're not going to be able to put that rig together for less than $650, so if you like it as it is, I'd say it's a decent buy.  I'd feel a lot better about the deal if he was only asking $600, and it'd be a no-brainer at $550 or less.  It's a good combination for a blackpowder hunting rifle.

I get a deer every year with mine.  Definitely get the limbsaver recoil pad.  It makes shooting 150 grains of pyrodex enjoyable.  The TC shockwave superglide sabots and Barnes MZ shoot best out of mine.  Both knock deer down immediately but the TC is much easier to load.

It is probably used for a reason.  I got  rid of mine and this may a story in  itself.  Take that money and look for something new.  I would research the Encore first, before you take this jump.

If you are hard over for a T/C, get a Triumph or Omega.  The Encore is just too much trouble!!!

No troubles with the Encore here -
Ive had 3 Omegas that would shoot a ragged hole all day long. But you had to swab the barrels to re-load them ( not to great of a deal for a hunter ) but if they would open the bore up a little I would buy another Omega in a heart beat.

I own an Encore and it is my ML of choice after owning several others to include the Omega.  I do think the price is a little high.  Too much for a used gun for me.

We are talking about Encores not Omegas!  The Omega and Triumph do not have removable barrels.  They are fixed.

But as we are talking about these guns:  "but if they would open the bore up a little I would buy another Omega in a heart beat."  This seems to be a regular problem with these ML and one that is a constant complaint from owners.  Why doesn't T/C work fix it???

Thats funny Larry since you brought up the Omega, I just followed up with a comment about how I had issues with an OMEGA....Read your post # 8 and relax a little.

Your quote from post #8.......

LMAO!  Very justified in pointing that out Two Bears!

You didn't vote for Mr. Obama did ya pal???

We  were talking about ENCORES, not other T/C products.  BIG difference in a tight barrel and a piece of junk that will not group or shoot anything but proprietiary bullets!  Old Two Bears said he had no problems with the Encore and then goes on to  say he had three Omegas (huh???) that would shoot tight groups.  Now what the hell does that have to do with an Encore????????????????  Then he  talks about issues with his Omega???

You guys didn't go to the same government school, did ya?

Oh yeah, maybe you didn't get the memo on the subject everyone else was talking about -- ENCORES!!!

They don't actually let you in the woods hunting all by yourself,  do they?  Maybe ya should get a refill on that cool aid you are drinking Teddy.

LMAO while I am righting this.     ???

No I didn't actually.  If you're complaining about people staying on topic why do you care who I voted for when we're talking about encores?

What on earth does any of this have to do with government?  I'm not trying to be a wise guy, but where is this coming from?

I just re-read the entire topic from the start and gotta say I really don't understand why you jumped on two bears about this when you brought up the other TC guns to begin with.  I don't understand why you would think I voted one way or another for any politician based on what you've read here.  Larry, could you please re-read the entire post and maybe this will help out some.

Teddy I was just having some fun with you.  I don't like the Encore and was just giving the fellow some advice and not to take the jump for a used Encore.  Remember mine was used and I was unsatisfied with it.  Maybe the guy selling this one is having the same problems and wants to get rid of it.  There are so many different types of inlines and traditional ML out there, I just thought this guy was favoring the T/C line of guns.  True, all T/C MLs will come with a very tight barrel and many people have complained about this condition.  The tight barrel does bother some folks and some may say that it would make them more accurate.  Now I have never found that to be true with my Encore.

As to Two Bears, He said he had no problems with the Encore and then supported this statement with his experiences with the Omega.  Maybe I was confused, but I saw no relationship between the two.  But if he had said he didn't have any experience with the Encore but did with the Omega, that would have been more clear and would have supported the idea of owning one.  Don't know if that clears it up for you.    ;)

I originaly bought my Encore as a as a muzzleloader and the price at the time was higher than most others.  The bore is tight as hell and it was a pain in the ass to figure out how to make it shoot.  I have several barrels for it now and it is my favorite rifle.  If I only wanted it for a muzzleloader I would not buy one again.  Too much trouble to get shooting.  As a gun that I can add calibers to for about 350 each including the scope it is great.  I kill a lot of animals with mine all year long.

Usually you hear of tight barrels with the Omega not so much with the Encore.
Bullet size and sabot thickness is very important with these muzzloloaders. A bullet with a diameter of .451 is ideal but .452 works and the sabot there are a few choices. I like the Harvester crush rib sabot, it has ribs on the outside that allow the bullet slide down the barrel easier.
Once you find what works the best and is accurate stick with it.
I found that the Hornady XTP 300 grain with the harvester crush rib works awesome in my Encore and use 85 grains of FFFG goex black powder.

Don't give up on that fine muzzleloader try new and better sabots and experiment with bullet size  then have some more fun with it.

I didn't give up one it.  The bore on mine is extremely tight but I found two sabots that shot very well.  One was the Barnes which required a clean barrel and still was very difficult to load.  The other is the T/C shockwave superglide which loads easily and knocks the deer down immediately.  I use mine every year and would not give it up now that I know what it likes.  It was a royal pain in the ass to get shooting when I first bought it though.
