I don't think you'll wind up with a match shooter, but relining is a very practical method of restoring worn or damaged bores so the rifle can be used again.  It is much more common for .22 rifles than for centerfires.  In fact, I don't know anyone who has had a centerfire relined, but I don't see why some of the "straight" cartridges couldn't be successfully done.  As in anythiing else, the quality of the liner is very important to the finished results.

One of the reasons to reline is to restore an old rifle to shootability when a replacement barrel is not available or too expensive to duplicate.  It will maintain the rifle's original markings and such.

The smith I used to know that did it has sadly passed away, so right now I don't have anybody specific to recommend.  Look for a smith that does restoration work.

I had my great-grandfather's 73Win relined by our local smith. It had been drilled smoothbore during the depression by a great-uncle and they fired 44 birdshot in it. After much soul-searching I decided the relining was the only to regain its original chambering and maintain the original markings. It's a great shooter and my son and I have a lot of fun with it. It's a 38-40 and left the factory in 1883.

glad I did it.

Check with John Taylor at Taylor Machine does relines and other work on old rifles, Dan Pederson is another
source. Liners are made I think by a gentleman who goes by the initials JT. If you want, post your request for barrel relining on the ASSRA.com website. They have a wealth of experience there, you should be able to get better answers than I can give there. Frank

I just recently relined a High Standard 107 for a fellow. The original chamber looked like someone had a go at it with a drill bit, and it wouldn't shoot at all. I made a liner out of a chunk of Krieger rimfire barrel, and epoxied and threaded it into place. Chambered with our Bentz reamer, that pistol now shoots dime sized groups at 50 yards with a scope. That worked WAY better than having to make a whole new barrel for him.
