T/C Renegade question
« on: July 07, 2009, 12:38:25 PM »
I bought an older Renegade .54 to put a GM .58 barrel in.  My question is, can the lock be adjusted on these?  "Half cock" doesn't even clear the nipple and full cock is about where the half cock is on my Hawken rifles.  Any body have a Renegade with a .58 GM barrel on it?  How does it shoot?  I'll shoot this first and see how the .54 shoots before picking up the GM barrel.

I have the 58 barrel on a T/C Hawken.  It shoots great.  It's really fun to shoot gongs with.
I also put a replacement trigger from trackofthewolf.com on it.  It's a Davis trigger, and takes about 5 minutes to switch out.  I sold the old trigger on ebay for $18.  The new trigger made a BIG difference.

As for your hammer problem, is the T/C nipple shorter than the GM nipple?  Switch them.

Have fun.

T/C percussion locks generally have a fairly high half-cock so I have to wonder if perhaps the sear tip has been broken off or perhaps shortened by someone attempting to "improve" the trigger pull. If that is the case T/C will repair it free of charge.
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.

I bought an older Renegade,,  "Half cock" doesn't even clear the nipple and full cock is about where the half cock is on my Hawken rifles.

That does sound a bit odd,,coyotejoe could have it right. It might just be really dirty, an old neglegted lock does some funny stuff, and for some reason many folks are afraid to clean locks!
Pull the lock out and spray it down with some kind of gun cleaner or Brake cleaner,,work the action,, and spray some more,,if you can, blow the thing out with air and/or dry it. Put a few drops of oil on the moving parts. Here's a key issue with those coil spring locks;; those two screws inside the lock that hold that plate in need to be TIGHT! If they are the tinyest bit loose, a little floppy thing in there called the "fly detent" will tip and jamb the lock at half cock.
Give 'er a good cleaning and let us know how it works :)
The .54 Renegade is a great round! they generally shoot better than most people do. a good tight fitting patch and loads between 75-85 grns of 2f should get you one hole at 50 and 4-6" goups at 100
