Remington BRANDED Ultra Varmint Handi-Rifle at Dicks SG?
« on: June 15, 2009, 03:56:24 AM »
From the looks of the ad, this may be a Remington. It has the newer MC stock and forend in camo, the first I have seen. Of course this is only an ad, has anyone actually seen one of these rifles? The ad doesn't have very much detail, just says "SINGLE SHOT CAMO SCOPED RIFLE COMBO AVAILABLE INASSORTED CALIBERS". Well at least there might be some more synthetic camo stocks & forends available in the future. Has anyone seen these in the store yet? They are in this weeks ad.

I saw the add in the flyer with the Sunday paper yesterday too.

I will be out and about today close to Dick's. Will check it out.

Don't suppose Remington will drop the H&R brand for it's own ?

Nice looking piece, from what the pix's shows.

That's just a BS advertising error by Dick's, it was brought up last week, I confirmed it as such with H&R/Remington.   The camo syn stock is the same checkered stock that comes on the 357mag and 44mag, just in camo. So let's not start this chicken little talk of H&R being gone.  ::)

Sorry Tim, I guess I missed that one. :-[ I was just asking a question if anyone had seen one, figured this would be the place to ask to get the straight scoop. I was wondering if it might be an ad error by Dick's, thus all the question marks and questions. Do you know what brand of scope they are putting on them? Do you know what calibers they are offering? The ad was very vague.

I was not insinuating that H&R was gone by any means, I was just wondering if Dick's might have gotten some Remington branded Handi's kinda like K-Mart got the Marlin 100 branded Pardners about 9 or 10 years ago after they purchased H&R/NEF.

Looks like a really good price to me. A camo stock with the scope, rings and mounts.

The scoped rifles were discussed in the Handi rebate thread which I unstuck and left a link in the FAQs for future reference like this.  ;D

http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,163719.0.html

The scopes are made offshore by the same OEM and to the same rigid specs as those sold on Remington firearms, they wouldn't tell me who makes them tho, same story as trying to get info on Cabela's scopes, it's an industry "secret".  :D

At least a couple here have bought them from Dick's, they're marked made in Ilion.

Kendall bought a .444 from another retailer that has the same stock.

Yes; I guess I didn't consider the value of the scope or that it may be decent quality, so I guess the price is OK..

I saw some here in Wichita, Kansas at Dicks and did not really check them out.  I always assumed when you buy a rifle with a scope the latter would probably need to be replaced by any serious shooter but I could be wrong.  Looked good on the shelf.

I have looked at them as well here in Wichita. They seem to be ok and I like the new camo stocks. Here they are offering them in .308, .223, and .22-250. I asked one of the guys that works there about the scope and didn't know anything about them. All he could tell me is that they had sold alot of them.

Snakeman--Since you are from Wichita perhaps we need to get a cup of coffee sometime and talk about guns and things that need talking about!

Picked up the 308 Win. on the way to work this after noon. feels good shoulders well. 3X9 scope that comes with it will probly go on my 17 mach2, I have a busnell banner shotgun scope that i will put on the 308. After break in I will give range report. (happy fathers day to me) Sinking deeper into handi-holicism, this is number 5 for me and a 30-30 is next. By the way it was 279.99 on sale and i had a $10 off coupon for dicks so 269.99 + tax came to 291.58.

I just saw one at the Dick's in New Hartford, NY.  It is stamped with the Harrington Richardson name, but also something like "Made in Ilion, NY" on the next line.

Went by my local Dick's SG in Asheville, NC.  The only handi (22-250) they had was a "Harrington & Richardson" marked, "CBA" serial numbered, "Made In Garner, Mass" rifle.  Should have bought it on the spot - locked up like a bank vault, but "gun control" stopped me (wife was with me).

The camo stock felt different to me, slightly shorter length of pull (like Rem 870).  Forearm was slimmer than I'd seen.  The couple 357/44 SB1's I've seen had a "store-end" forend shape, almost a pot belly to it.  I put one each on my 444/30-06/223 rifle & like it, but this one was much slimmer & seemed much more rigid.

If it was a 223, I might have had to send "Miss GC" shoe shopping.

out of the box impressions of the 308 Win. 1 its not a true bull barrell there is a slight tapper from the chamber It would have been nice if it was the same diamiter from breach to crown so that the last inch and 1/2 of scope rail wasn't off the barrel. 2 i like the stock and foreend both have a good feel to them and the gun shoulders niceley. 3 the scope is a 4-12X44 that was a suprise, i expected a 3-9.  nowhere on it does it state a manufaturer or the country it was made in.(going to try scope on my savage 10FP 223) 4 The scope rings seem cheap not sure if i would put them on anything more than a 22 mag. I used weaver quad lock medium hieght scope rings to mount a banner 3-9X44 shotgun scope on it. I need to pick up some JB paste and do the quick barrel break in described in handi facts 101 then will give a range report. Overall I am more than satisfied with the value of this gun, lock up deffinately seems good and solid. Am really looking foward to shooting this gun !

Spikehorn, I liked the feel of the 308 also. I got the 223 and 308 was better balanced. I need a 308 like I need another appendage. Might learn to use another though. My scope is a 4-12x40. The 308 here had 3-9. They gave me another scope as mine had a broken plastic adjustment. I took off the kwick site rings and the threads had ate into the base pretty badly. I put on Weavers also. Surprised the mediums fit for you. Mine are high.  Thinking of lapping the rings, have never done it on the Weavers before. Prob. waste of time? Loctite should be dry now. Odd how that 2'' shorter barrel and bigger bore affect the weight and balance. Good Luck and let us know how it shoots.

yeah the weaver mediums are a little high but not to bad, the ocular bell on the banner won't let me use low ones. i'm not even sure if grinding off the hammer would help that. anyway I seem to be having a hard time locating J-B paste around here probably will have to order it on line. neither dick's nor gander mtn has it and bass pro if they do have it is too long of a drive for something that's less than 5 bucks. I found it at brownells on line for 3.99 shipping cost more than the paste !
I already have 3 223's and this is actually my 3rd 308. i do love that round. 1 of them is a 1916 spanish mauser ( that doesn't get shot very much) and I also have a Stevens 200.
