M92 Rossi W/Bolt Peep Range Report
« on: June 30, 2009, 09:11:00 AM »
As per my previous threads, I fashioned a replacement plug for the bolt top safety on my big loop, 16" bbl, .45 Colt LSI/Puma Rossi Model 92 - then asked Dr. Tim Skinner of Skinner Sights to make one of his LO-Pro peeps for me, that had a smaller, 6-48 (scope mount screw size) stem, ILO his normal "Marlin" sized stem.

With this sight being adjustable for elevation only, I knew that any windage adjustment would have to be made via moving the front sight to one side or the other.

Since this is a hunting rifle, so I secured a few boxes of COR-BON .45 Colt +P 200gr.1100fps JSP's, and headed for my club's 50yd range.

BTW - The COR-BON load turned out to be fairly pleasant shooting in my rifle, from a sitting position at a bench.

The JSP's loaded and fed/cycled perfectly from the magazine, or when single-loaded (as I did for the first sighter/shot).
That first sighter is the low bullet hole (below), down in the 6-ring at about 7:00 o'clock.

I then adjusted the elevation upward, via twisting/unscrewing the Lo-Pro, two full turns, then tightened the locking ring that I had thinned out on my grinding wheel.
I then moved/tapped the front sight to the left about 1/16", to correct for windage.

With five rounds loaded in the mag, I was lucky enough to shoot this 2 1/16", 5-shot group - not that I set much store in group sizes for hunting rifles.
I'd much rather a hunting rifle place it's first shot to the POA every single time - resulting in perfect one-shot groups on a DRT game animal.

I still have more practicing to do from offhand positions, at brown cardboard rounds placed varying unknown distances away - but it looks like I just might be good to go, with this .45 !

Nice rifle and a very nice range report!  My next trip to the range will be completely focused on my puma 92's.  Only about 4 and a half months left before hunting season starts!  I can hardly sit still this year just waiting to hunt again with the puma rifle.

Rangr44, so I guess that sheds some light on concerns about the sight being mounted to the slide. Did it catch you while you were levering the action at all? Did you notice any movement on the base or peep?

Thanks, Chaps

Thank you, Teddy.

[Did it catch you while you were levering the action at all?] -
No it didn't, Chaps.
BTW - I don't see why that should concern anyone, since the rear of the bolt is what is closest to the face, and if it was going to hit the shooter's face, it wouldn't make a bit of difference whether or not there was a bolt peep mounted atop it.

[Did you notice any movement on the base or peep?] -
No - And I made it a point to look for any.
The peep was as solid as any other part of the rifle.

Thanks - really appreciate the range report, and answers.

Do you know if Dr. Skinner will be selling plugs with peeps? Was the peep you asked for a custom run, or does he normally stock a 6-48 stem? Could you have tapped your plug solution for a Marlin stem?

I know Steve Young is also developing a combination plug/peep, but I haven't seen it up ready for sale yet. As many of those 92s floating around out there, I would think that'd sell.

I have a mod 59 Rossi .22mag pump.  It is close to the Taurus pump, so I wondered if the Taurus tang sight would work.  It fits great, and it only cost $33.  It is very well made and easily adjustable.  I have never used a tang sight and I like it, and the .22mag pump, it is fine.

[Do you know if Dr. Skinner will be selling plugs with peeps?] -
No, I don't know - but the ears on the issue safety could always be filed down flat, then the dehorned safety D/T'd & cold blued.

[ Was the peep you asked for a custom run, or does he normally stock a 6-48 stem?] -
During an email chat with Dr.Tim, he told me that his normal Lo-Pro stem size was for the Marlin scope mount holes, but that he would gladly make one with a stem in any thread size I wanted - 10-32, 8-40, or 6-48 - for the same $$$.
It turned out that, when ordering the Lo-Pro online from the Skinner website, the order form has a space for comments, where the buyer can specify their wants.
I had the peep in my mailbox two days after I placed my order with the Skinner website - excellent service.

[Could you have tapped your plug solution for a Marlin stem?] -
Yes & No.
The size/thickness, of a stem sized for Marlin scope mount holes, leaves a very thin plug - almost too thin for D/T'ing easily.
It was too uncomfortable for me - which is why I went to a thinner stem.
If I were to want a very large stem, I would tap the safety hole, and get a stem large enough for that - like the XS, or another Skinner - to mount the peep directly in the bolt.

Tapping the saftey hole makes alot of sense.  One less thing to go wrong on a sight is good.  (Murphy's Law and I are old friends, things will go wrong for me when I try to change something. :-[)  DP
