Good morning everyone, its another fine cool Montana morning here in Kalispell.  I doubt the ground squirrels are going to be playing much today, rain and the cold wind have alot to do with keeping them down under.  I am thinking about another shooter for them in either 17 HMR or 22 Mag.

Since I got my new pickup (new used) here this last weekend, I just might make a test drive over east and go about as far as Cut Bank just to see what kind of milage it gets  ;D

You wouldn't believe the deal my wife found for me:

1997 Nissan XL 4x4, Milage 085281, New Tires, and the color I wanted ta boot.

Montanan : Probably good milage heading east , lousy heading west .
One time we rode motor cycles up to the park . Wind was blowing so hard from the west /I had to shift down to get down "Wiskey John Hill "  just west of Browning . The rest of the group were riding bigger bikes and laughed  at me !  ;D

;) Hey, I realize this is the hunting montana site, but I looked over the fly fishing site, and not much happens there. My girl friend and I are leaving for a trip to Cody for cuts. We would like to visit a cousin of hers in SW Mt., but so far haven't been able to contact him. We figured we would take the trailer and just ease over that way and hook up with him around Ennis. My question is, does anyone know how the fishing is doing is SW MT.?? When I traveled in that country years ago, their streams and rivers seemed to clear and be fishable far sooner than ours in southern Wy.  Also, what species of ground squirrel do you have in MT.? We have the Richardsons here in Wy. When I visited with Bob Hagel in Idaho, he remarked they had Columbian groundsquirrels. They seemed bigger than the species we have here. I would like to pop a couple of the bigger ones if I get the chance. Thanks.

Can't help you on the fishing thing, but the ground squirrels up here in my Area are Richardsons.

Wyo. Coyote Hunter, most the streams in this area (northern end of SW Montana) are still running pretty high. Most of the snow is melted off in the hills and the rain is slowing down, so things should be back to normal soon. There was a 35", 20# brown trout caught on a 5 wt rod in a local river recently, so its always worth a shot. Good luck and let us know how you do.

Hey 'yote hunter,
Your friend is right.  In Southwest Montana, most gophers are the Columbian variety and they are a bit bigger than Richardsons.  The rivers are dropping fast.  The Madison, Jefferson, and Big Hole Rivers usually drop just as soon.  My guess, the rivers will be clear in a week or two.
Might want to carry a side arm, cause the snakes in that area will be out and about and there is a cat explosian throughout Western Montana.
Gotta git'me a bigger ice box

:D Mt. Sourdough, Thanks for the information. I would like to shoot a couple Columbian squirrels, and try some of the Mt. rivers. Haven't fishted them for years. ;)
