m70 .222 rechambered to .223

I need some help. There is a local fellow here that has a Wichester M70 (1970s model) that has been Match rechambered from .222 to .223. It has a 1:14 twist (I shoot 40 gr V-MAX).

What is involved in rechambering from 222 to 223? Is this  safe mod? The 223 has higher pressure, correct? Is an M70 Varmint ok to do this rechambering? I lik ethe newer M70s, were the old ones (1970s) goo guns?

DR> I am not a model 70 fan, but pals and I have rechambered a number of .222's to 223. If it is done correctly, it should be fine. It is running  a reamer into the chamber and lenghten it for the .223. BUT this is not a simple job, and must be done by a competent 'smith. It could have been done for several reasons. One the barrel was worn, and this would give it some new life, and other was the .223 ammo was at one time very cheap, and for a non reloader it was a cheap way to shoot. The .222 was never available in reman. ammo like the .223.  I think the model 70's in the 70's were better than those that left the factory in 65. But this is something a model 70 fan will have to help you with.

   I went all the way 221 to 223 in a T/C . Its ok but you are really limited to the weight bullets that you use . I had to use 221 weight bullets you have a wider choice . I do not think that pressure ,etc should be a problem unless you are a hot- rodder !!!
