Pitting on a blued gun.
« on: August 29, 2009, 05:46:54 PM »
I picked up a new gun this week, and I noticed a few tiny dots of pitting and a few other spots that are kinda small. Mainly on the side plate, and inside the trigger guard. What do I do with this on a blued gun to keep them from getting any larger, and is there any way to get rid of them?

These pictures were the best I could do. Sorry.

I tried to submit four pictures, but only one came up. When I tried to re-submit the other three, it said I had already done so.

Sorry, I'm too old for technology.

You'll  never get rid of the pitting. But if you polish with a product called Flitz, should stop it from getting worse, then use a good metal wax to shine it up and put a good protector on it. (I use Flitz gun wax, but any good car wax should do.) gypsyman
We keep trying peace, it usually doesn't work!!Remember(12/7/41)(9/11/01) gypsyman

I usually use fine steel wool on rust but if pitting has already occured the pits will remain. WD40 works fairly well to displace the any poisture under the rust or in it. This will also harden and seal our oxygen to slow further rusting. Polishing the pits out and re-bluing is the only sure fix..for pits.

As an earlier reply stated, not much you can do with any pitting that has occured.  But to deal with cause of pitting and present rust, I'd treat area with either a penetrating oil or a product I have, Blue Wonder Cleaner.  Both will kill, so to speak, the rust. After application of either one, I'd then lightly rub the pitted area with a fine steel wool and then oil the area.

What grade of steel wool should I use. I sure don't want to scratch it up.

A lot depends on the polish level of the gun in question but I usually suggest staying with 0000, which is the finest grade normally available. The cold blue solution is a good idea. I use oxphoBlue but these solutions, actually cold parkerizing solutions will neutralize the tiniest bit of rust remaining in the pit and protect any bare metal. To keep the rust down a fine protective wax is the best bet. I use a spray material called RustPreventIt. Bought a couple of cans just a few weeks ago. clean the gun well, spray and allow the material to sit on the surface to be protected for a time. Then just rub away the excess. Lasts a really long time and will withstand fingerprints without rust. Yet it can easily be removed with almost any solvent or gun cleaning solution.

Thanks gunnut. Most of my guns have been stainless, and I just didn't want to make things worse on a blued finish.
