New plug range results
« on: June 28, 2009, 01:47:58 PM »
I got the new MU plug a few months ago. Had the chance to take it to the range on Friday. A little background: I wanted the plug because I expected there might be a time that the carriers would run out and I would be left with a gun I couldn't shoot. I don't hunt with this gun anymore. I chose the more traditional Hawken when that week rolls around. My 13yo son is the primary user of the Huntsman. I only need 50 yard accuracy on this gun. I don't see us taking any shots further than 50 because of where we hunt and my son's skill. We are not that big in to blackpowder hunting or shooting. We have a 1 week season and that's the only time we use the gun.
I took what I had on hand to the range. I had found 777 pellets at Walmart on sale post season so I bought them. Winchester 209 primers that are sold and marketed as muzzleloader primers. My bullets where saboted 240 grain XTP.
At the range, no big surpises. The gun shot very consistantly. One thing that was very noteworthy was the ingnition. It was surprisingly instantaneous. Other notables, 777 is very dirty stuff. I made the mistake of running some Black Off through the gun with the breech plug still installed and this was enough to stick it. I had to diassemble the gun to break the plug loose. The plug was undoctored and the only trouble I had removing spent primers was remedied with a fingernail. Before I left the range I installed the old plug and used the carriers for three shots. All three were hang fires with the combo.
I need to make sure that I check Busta's thread for a load that the simple man can use. I don't spend a lot of time shooting it and thus don't spend a lot on bullets and powder. I suspect I will have to use loose powder for the best results though.
Get right with the Man.

Nice to hear it is working for ya. I'm sure you probably have read this, but try some Black Horn 209 it is amazing with this plug. I would say start with 80 grs. The beauty of this powder is how clean it shoots.  There is still a small smoke cloud upon firing, but no soot.

Happy shooting
Nick :)
