243 Handi range report
« on: June 27, 2009, 05:40:05 AM »
I took my 243 Ultra bull barrel out this morning along with my Marlin XL7 3006 to a range in the area. My 2 best groups were on the same target. The larger (H414 46.5 grains and 58 grain V-Max bullet) of the two was 1.125" @ 80 yards and the smaller (H414 47 grains and 58 grain V-Max bullet) one was  .69 @80 yards. The range says 100 yards on the NRA sight but I walked it off several times and came up with 80 yards every time. I am happy with the smaller group and think I will load up some and use that as my varmit load in my 243.

Work em up! 8) Sound like you are on track. Amazing how just half grain can make such a difference isn't it.

It is isn't it. The 1/2 grain shrunk the group by about a half then the next half grain up and the group got bigger again. I think I am going to keep this loading for now.

I found a sweet spot by increasing charges about 1/2 gr with my 357 handi...went from 2 1/2" to less than an inch with just 1/2 gr difference

It really shows you what you can do with proper load development. Nice shooting.

I had almost the same experience with my Marlin XL7 in 3006 yesterday as well. I shot a group which was nearing what I was looking for for deer hunting (1.25" or so) and 1/2 grain later it dropped to about .7" (80 yards) but still it dropped a little over 1/2" in group size. Great fun and more satisfaction to do this. Charlie
