Are the Winchester 1400's reliable guns?
« on: September 09, 2009, 10:37:07 PM »
Basically what the title says. Are they reliable and long lasting without too many problems or should they be avoided like the plague? I can get one that looks 95% with 3 choke tubes for 200 bucks.
Let me know if I should apply my 200 elsewhere as I know of an 1187 camo for 400+tax.

It  just seems to me that I had heard about an issue with the reciever that when worn can't be replaced or fixed economically and will basically turn it into a parts gun. Kinda like the 742 when the extractor lip wears on the bolt they turn into singleshots and too expensive or hard to get parts makes it prohibitive.

Owned one for a short time years ago.  It wouldn't function with light trap loads, but other than that I didn't have any problems with it.

Just didn't like it.  To me it looked and felt "cheap".  It's not in the same league as a Rem 1100 or 11-87.

Just my opinion, others may rightly disagree.

We used to make fun of my brother because he had two of them, said he should carry both at the same time pheasant hunting so at least he could get two shots off. Unreliable would be a huge understatement although they would function with slugs. ??? He has a Beretta Pintail now and likes it a lot. There's a reason a semi-auto in that condition is $200.

While I agree with hunt-m-up about the reason for the price I can state that I have a couple and have never had a problem with them as far as function and reliability goes.
They are on the cheap side as far as quality but so are some of the other brands.
Maybe I have just been lucky with my two so far.

I would add that he probably needed to clean them internally after every use and I'm sure he didn't,but they didn't seem to want to cycle very well even after he had cleaned them. They were light and pointed fairly well, but just not as reliable for him as other shotguns were/are. I want to say his were the Ranger model? Maybe not constructed as well.

I decided to go with a Beretta 390 Camo Wild Turkey Federation Shotgun with 24" barrel for 500+tax.
I could have gotten an 1187 camo for 400+tax but it sold right before I walked in. I think the Beretta is a better gun anyways.
