I've hunted bait sites in the past and have been concerned the big guy woudn't come out before dark.  Is there and advantage to setting up a stand in the thicket between bait sites in hopes of ambushing a larger bear milling about before coming out in the open?

Set up in the darkest, thickest place you can find, especially in a gully, or the base of a hill, the edge of a swamp, any place cool or secluded, try to get out of the wind and this should solve your problem.

The big guys don't get that way by being stupid.  We had to move a hunter this year because the bear knew he was there and started coming in after dark.  The hunter got a bear but all indications were that the other one was bigger and smarter than us.  We have tried putting only the sweetest bait out and then nothing for a couple days to entice the bear in.  We have switched buckets from one bait to another giving the impression that another bear has come into the site.  All the advice about location, dark-wind free-swamp-are all good but its just a matter of luck with a lot of work.  Putting a stand between sites is ok if you own the land and can control the location.  We are under strict rules from the paper companies and the state and the sites have to be at a minimum at least a half mile apart and we have to pay for them.  Also if you put a hunter out in the middle without at least a bucket to watch, he would have to be a real understanding guy and buy into the logic of the location of the stand.  For youself, why not try it.  What have you got to lose.
