Buck Knives

Bought a little Buck 379 and what to my suprise is on the blade when I open it up.... CHINA :o

In 2004 Buck opened a plan in China. About 30% of their knives are now made there. One of the reasons....Walmart, among others, demanded less costly knives to sell along with the rest of their less costly,mostly made in China, wares.  Millions of people shop there, blindly closing their eyes  to what is happening to the American Manufacturing scene...It's now the largest employer in this country, next to our government.  That tells you what about the American consumer? You get what you deserve, and Walmart and Target and all the others are more than happy to see you get it.  Think about it next time you walk in one of them.

There are US knives.  I do a little carving and buy Queen D2 steel.  A little pricey but they hold an edge and fit my hand.

Good and Bad News from Buck Knives

I was reading this on another forum and found it quite admirable that in this day and age a company would pursue this, namely the 'Commitment Plan'. Also, I heard that the employees had voted on a 4 day work week for EVERYONE in order to lessen the amount of lay offs. Very cool IMO.

Doesn't hurt that they make some dang fine knives in the USA already, I just bought one of their new Vantage Pro folders w/ G10 scales and BOS heat-treat S30V..... for less than $50 it's a HUGE bargain, again IMO. ;D

I guess you could say I'm a bit of a Buck fan.... and Bark River..... and Fallkniven.... and.....

As a result, the company says ninety-five percent (95%) of their new knives for 2009 and 2010 will be produced domestically. All of the company's hunting knives are currently U.S. made, but about thirty-percent of their overall products were produced offshore prior to their American Commitment program.

Buck Knives began more than 100 years ago after company founder Hoyt Buck sold his first knife using worn-out file blades to get a tempered steel that would hold a better edge.

What yanks my chain is I thought I was buying an american made knife from an american company at the time. I don't remember seeing anything on the package that stated it was made in china. I'll have to look at another package closer.

  I'd send it to Buck, with a polite letter complaining. (if i couldn't take it back where i bought it)   I bet you they would replace it for free, or for a small cost, to a USA model...

I bought a Bear knife, made like the old Schrade Sharp Finger this past month...It seems like a nice knife, I haven't even sharpened it yet, it came sharp right out of the box...

Ace Hardware carries these, they are made in AL...

With all the healthcare talk and Wally World being such a large employer...I wonder how many of their workers have health care insurance???

Now, if I were the Pres, that's where I'd start...Now excuse for those folks, working for a Company here in the States not having health insurance...

Drilling man you have a very good idea there. Thats one of the reasons I want to stop and look at the packaging to see if it says anything and I just missed it or if its one of those things in print so small it could only be read by super man or it says nothing at all.
What type of letter they get depends on what I find or don't find on the package.
