Here's my salute for the 4th of July
« on: July 04, 2009, 03:48:22 AM »

I only fly this flag once a year, every year on the 4th of July. I live back-o-beyond on a dead-end dirt road, up the side of a hill in a rural mountain hollow with only one valley road in and the same road out.

Somehow, the roar of my cannon and the flapping of my flag on this day, in this setting, seems to mean alot more than if I were anywhere else. It speaks volumes.

I've had hammer-heads appear quite upset, while asking me why I fly an "English" flag on this day (as if I were a Tory)?

The irony of it is, they wouldn't even know what a "Tory" was.  Alot of people who have strong opinions, are rarely bright enough to even discuss the weather.

This is the first flag that was presented to General George Washington by the Continental Congress. This bunting illustrates the need for independance and the reluctance for complete seperation. It is the first "national" flag of the U.S.A..

Along with it, I fly my original colours of Ireland; pre harp and pre tricolour.  King George (an original Hammer-Head), banned it from display because he said the three crowns were too Papal.

So enjoy your 4th; all of you whom have adopted our country, from wherever you or your ancestors came from.

Me?  Mine they tell me, have been here since 1710 in South Carolina and I'm running two picnic shoulders through my smoker to have pulled pork today. Eat your hearts out.

thelionspaw,

Nice photo. Thanks for sharing. Is the coffee cup for size reference?  :D  :D  :D I'm surprised it did fall with your salute.  :D

RC, that was the perfect way to start this day off; thanks for the photo, and the appropriate for the occasion, history lesson.

Coffee cup, hell, that would be more accurately described as a bucket, that thing's as big as the nave of the wheel. I hope it's filled with coffee, because if it's filled with stout, the next photo posted will have been taken by your wife, and it will show you being held to the ground by a figurative lion's paw on your chest. :D
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

Here's Southpaw's salute.

Here's mine!

This is Patrick, he's 12. He's not a teenager yet, he's two years younger than all the other teen age kids at the 4th Clelebration at Southpaws.  He has never ridden an ATV, drove a car or truck or fired cannon, not even seen one fired in has life. He was bored and nothing to do.   So to keep him out of mischief all day long it was, "Patrick drive the ATV up to the House and get us some cold drinks" Patrick drive the ATV down range and pick up the cannon balls", "Patrick fire this cannon for me", "Patrick drive me in my truck up to the house for dessert.".  Nor once did we have to tell him twice and not once did we have look for him!  A tradition passed!   ;D

Happy 4th of July every one

Yes!  DD has a photobucket account and as soon as he sees this in a blink of an eye he'll have it fixed and give you the details of how / what he did!

These are all great pics! Thanks to everyone for sharing! RC, thanks for the history lesson, Brokenpole, what kind of bullet-proof glass is your back yard patio table made of? Great way to get a 12 year old involved, he will remember this fourth of July for sure! BoomLover

You should have seen the double salute (30 gr FFg with bread wadding).  Recoil was right off the table.  Actually I am trying to break that one so the wife will let me ge a new one.

The link post was not a picture link it was was a link to a slide show in a website so it should have been hyperlinked...but right now photobucket is down.  Be patient guys, I'll bet there is some great stuff in that slide show.
