break open or bolt

I am wondering which is more accurate for those that have experience with both.

ok the reason i ask is i owned a break open but have not owned or shot a bolt ML my next question would be how is it to clean and care for it like the breech plug removal and that. and i guess another question would be how bout the caplock/sidelock guns for accuracy and care. thanks for the answer.

No such thing as one type being more accurate than the other. Each rifle has its sweet load, it just takes time and patience to get there.  Ive bolt action, plunger,break open. All of them did excellent. My break open optima actually out shot my omega.

And for sidelocks, heres my CVA Mountain Stalker @ 100 yards with open sights, ( i am going to try Pyrodex P and see if i can get it to tighten)

exactly what bigblock said. Any muzzleloader is accurate if you find the right load for it.  The action is actually quite immaterial.

The animal wont know the difference. ;) Break open's are alot easier to maintain in my opinion.

In my case, both are more accurate, depends on the loads. I probably have shot my best group with my bolt Disc Ext MHC, but my NEF Huntsman is way more consistant with a much wider variety of loads. They are both sub-MOA shooters with the right loads, no animal can live on the difference.

The break open wins between it and the bolt, but the sidelock (without a scope) is by far the easiest to clean IMO. The accuracy for sidelocks can be very good, but cannot match the inlines UNLESS you get a fast twist barrel and mount a scope on it. You can scope up a quality inline for much less than scoping and rebarreling a sidelock IMO.

I think the easiest to clean is a bolt - if it is a Savage at least because it does not need to be cleaned that much.  Mine is awful accurate also.

Both may be accurate enough for deer hunting, but the bolt gun is the most accurate.  Think about it.

I did but all I got was a headache trying to figure it out cuz it made no sense. I will match my encore or my sidekick (both break open by the way) against any bolt muzzleloader they ever made as far as accuracy goes.

The break open design results in a shorter gun, eliminating the length the bolt action adds to the gun.

There is no difference in accuracy between the two designs, in muzzleloader applications.

As most others have said both are or can be just as accurate as the other. While a bolt high powered rifles on avg maybe more accurate than a break open design I just haven't found that to be the case in ML's. Different vibrations and tendency's. Like Busta my Huntsman is the overall most accurate ML I have it shoots just about anything under 2" and some bullets and loads into one hole. My Omega is much touchier about loads but with the right one will put nearly every shot in a single hole, my traditions bolt is same some loads might be 6" but some 1". So far I have never bought a ML that I couldn't find a accurate load for it. That's the beauty of ML'ing handloading every shot.

My Encore shoots as well as the Knight i have , It shoots as well as a friends Remington . since threr is no cart. pushing back aginst the breach face , the plug takes the pressure the forces that effect a cart. gun don't exist . so if lock up is tight it would seem they should be the same .
I the real world each rifle would be a different story . The break open is better for me.
