M1 Garand for Sil's?

Sorry to be loading up the board with so many questions but I have a couple more.

Looking at Rule 3.1 here:  http://www.lasc.us/LASClevermatch.htm it says that a .30 M1 and M1A/M14 are allowable exceptions to the overall weight rule. I know it isn't mentioned specifically but would an M1 Garand fall under the M1A as an allowable exception too?

Excluding the Garand I do have a bolt action 30-06. Anyone have any recommendations for lighter bullets that would work ok for sil's and keep the recoil down?

Yep, M1 Garand is allowed. You'll need some 5 shot clips. Plus you'll have your own class and since hardly anybody else uses one you'll finish well! They are a lot of fun, and quite challenging to use.

As for bullets, I use 147gr. M80 ball bullets in my 308 and 30-06 bolt guns, loaded to 2600 fps or so. Plenty of power, and minimal recoil. Regular M2 ball ammo works fine in the M1, but does blow around a bit out at the ram line in the wind.

The Garand's, M1A's etc are used in their own class? I was thinking you would be competing in the standard rifle(?) class with everyone else but just be permitted to shooted an overweight rifle. Either way though I can put one more chalk mark next to the Garand as another "pro" for buying one as my next gun .

M1As and Garands are shot in HP Silhouette in the "Iron Sights" class.
In the case of the Garand, all you need is to make sure you load no more than 5 rounds per bank of silhouettes.

With the M1A/M14, you must have either a 5 round magazine, or if using a 20 round mag, avoid resting the base of the magazine in the palm of your hand, holding the rifle from the fore end.

I shot my M1A a few times and found that if the silhouettes are placed in a beam, you can align the top of the front sight with the beam underneath as a point of hold...  Best of luck,

Thanks AJ, I can imagine their aren't a ton of people wanting to shoot open sights when there are scope classes too. My interest in the Garand is so that I would have a rifle to shoot CMP High Power which is popular around here and then maybe use it for sil's if I had the chance to do that.

The M-1 & M1A can be shot in Standard Class (there is no "iron sight class") which is where the weight exception and requirement to not use the M-1A mag as rest comes in (rule 3.1h) or if the match has a military class the mag can be used to support the gun (Rule 3.1.2B)

Glad to see some interest in the M1 for Silhouettes. The guys at Ridgway, Pa have had matches for the last two years just for rule 3.1.2B Military semi-auto rilfes. Check your score book, it's in there.
 They have been held on the 1st Sunday of the month in April-May & June. Next year, 2010 there's talk about making the June match a State Championship.
If this happens it will be a chance to set some National records as none exist now.
