8mm Kurz

For those who don't know, the 8mm Kurz was developed by Nazi Germany for use in the StG-44 assault rifle.  Prvi Partisan is making brass cased, boxer primed ammunition for this cartridge.  What I'm wondering is whether it would be safe to chamber a Contender barrel for this round, or whether it would be an Encore only proposition.

It seems like an interesting round, but I'm not sure if the Contender could handle it.  Thoughts, anyone?

It depends on the chamber pressure to which the ammo is loaded.  The case diameter is large (based on the 8x57JS) so pressures should be kept below 40,000 psi for safety in the Contender.

MGM just made me a 30/40 Krag barrel for a Contender. The gun will be used a poking around looking for deer. I tend to favor large cabilers at modest speeds. One of the other cartridges I looked at was 9.3x57. The 9.3x57 is popular in Sweden for moose hunting. Any comments on the cartridge, use in a Contender but not my spelling. Also any idea where the presure runs in a 9.3x57?

The 8mm Kurtz is the fore runner to the 7.62X39 and if the contender can not handle the 7.62X39 I would think it could not handle the 8mm Kurtz.

The 9.3x57 is loaded in the same pressure range as the 8x57JS, so it is absolutely not safe in a Contender.  Get a .358 JDJ or a .375 JDJ, either is safe and has the advantage of a rimmed case.

What I wasn't sure of was whether the walls on the 8mm Kurz would be straight enough to allow it to grip well enough to reduce backthrust or not.  I don't know what equation one would use to calculate backthrust, nor what one would use to calculate case grip.

I've been curious for a while now about finding or making a cartridge that would allow a guy to push 125 grain 8mm bullet out of a Contender.  I know it's mostly an answer looking for a question, but I think it would be neat.

The answer is the 8mm JDJ - been around for over twenty years and will push a 125-grain .323" bullet plenty fast out of a Contender.
