I saw something really really neat this morning on the way to work.

I was my way to work this morning with a new guy I hired to help me build a deck. We were going down the hiway when I saw a Helicopter off to my left about 10 or 15 feet above the trees along the road. It had something about 20 foot long hanging from it. Thats when I did a double take. This thing had a huge brush hog atatched to it. I slowed way down to get a better look. It was just chewing up the tops and sides of the trees like there was nothing to it. It was not a clean neat job to say the least. It sure was making a mess out of them trees. He was cutting the ones along a power line. It sure looked dangerous for the pilot though. What would happen if it got stuck with to big of a branch? I would think there would be some kind of quick disconect to just turn the brush loose in such cases. That sure would be expensive though. I have to say it was really neat and I have never saw anything like it before. Have any of you seen one of these? Dale

Yes Dale, I've seen them in use along power line right of ways.  Allways out in remote loctions.  It's kind of like a Brush Hog, suspended by cables. 

Also in one of the James Bond movies a few years ago they had a unit that attatched to a chopper that cut trees, it had a series of circuler blades that cut in a verticle manner.

Ok. I did a little research on this now. This morning I only got to see this for maybe 20 seconds. This is what I saw this morning. They have been doing the trimming around here like that for a few years now. Last year I sit and watched them drill holes for the poles one day, and the next day brought the poles in with one and set them in the holes. Then a ground crew came in and set them later. Really something to watch!

I knew a guy that got killed about 40 years ago when trimming trees that way.  He was the first I had heard of that used the gang saws.  His last name was Rodgers and he was from Rogers, AR.  I think his chopper was under powered as he had a bigger engine ordered when the accident occurred.

They were doing it again this morning on my way to work. This time I pulled over and watched it for about 5 minutes. I have to say it is very interesting!!!!! :o That is one skilled pilot. That is a dangerous operation he is doing. While we were there watching I told my helper it would be my luck he would lose control and crash into us. :o :o :o We were only a few hundred yards from him at the time. It really is crazy to see those blades just chew up anything in it's path. Dale

I have worked around helicopters some during my career.  If one goes down parts will fly a long distance. You can expect parts of the main rotor to be found more than a thousand feet from the main impact point.  If a tailrotor flys off the distance multiplies because of the elevation of the helicopter. 

I just about seen a guy get it when he was working under a helicopter and the pilot released the sling load, which includes the cable.  The cable came to the ground like a live snake.  If it had struck the person on the ground it could have been fatal.

If I was not hooking up cargo I normally had an excape route planned behind a large tree or vehicle.  I have no doubt a main rotor would penetrate into the cab of a pickup.

WoW!  Hauling sling loads is hazardous, working around powerlines is hazardous, put this all together and I can't imagine the risks.  I wonder what he gets paid and how long a day he puts in?
