.41 mag barrel blank
« on: July 12, 2009, 01:22:23 PM »
I am in need of either a new .41 mag barrel blank or an old replaced barrel that had the throat eroded but still decent rifling.  What I am planning on doing with it is creating a rifled choke for a 410 shotgun.  Comments? Ideas?

Thanks,
Matt

Generally the 410 is paired with the 45 Colt handgun round as in the Taurus 'Judge" revolver.. You might also contact some of the choke tube makers such as Briley as they may already have what you wish. If just a project 45 acliber barrels are available from Numeric. some may even be available as liners..

gunnut,

What I have is an H&R 410 smooth bore that is .410 diameter barrel.  Which is why I need a 41 mag barrel blank, (not real easy to find a cheap one).  I would like to have a custom choke made but I have a feeling that I could do it way way cheaper than I could have it done by using the barrel blank.  Numerich's does not have any 41 mag barrels, very frustrating with all of the barrels they do have.  Do you have any sources?

thanks,
Matt

MATT - I was thinking about the same thing, but maybe even lining the whole barrel back to the chamber. I just bought this old Model 220B Savage in .410 and got a mount and scope (1.5X Simmons) on it. Yes it's legal with a 18.25-inch barrel. I have only got it bore sighted so far. It has not been tesed for accuracy but I think it would probably shoot better with a rifled bore. I used to shoot slugs out of the .410 barrel of a Stevens .22/.410 over/under and they were pretty accurate. - DON

What you first need to do is buy a cheap box of 410 slugs and cut out a slug. You will find that the diamitet is closer to .36 than .41.

Believe me Billy, I have done my home work on this subject and know why they are .36.  they are .36 because they are made to fire through all 410's with no problem.  Even ones with full chokes.  Now does anyone know where I can find a barrel blank?

Thanks

Try this:  Looks like .400 bore .408 groove?  Could work just fine.  Just cut a throat in it, make sure that it is threaded properly to have the twist when the bullet hits the rifled part of the tube tighten it into the barrel, if not it will unscrew when fired.  I would just silver in the last 1/4 inch with the rest being a press fit.  Larry

Larry,

Wow, that is awesome.  I could totally afford to get one and try it out for sure.  My biggest concern is the 2 thousandths constriction.  Not sure it would take a jacketed bullet and might affect accuracy with lead.  I really don't know though, any thoughts?  Then again I have not slugged the barrel yet to see exactly how big it is.  Might be perfect.  Could you explain how you would cut a throat in it and about the sliver and press fit, I'm not quite following.  Thanks again Larry, great source and mucho cheep.

Thanks,
Matt

With bullets that large .002 isn't crap, would not even make a bump in the travel, could even make it a little more accurate, like I said, just cut a throat in it and you will be good to go.  When you chuck it in the lathe to turn the outside, just cut about a 2 degree taper into the barrel starting at about .412 inches, press fit with the last 1/4 inch cut back about .004 or so for the silver to flow into, solder the joint and turn a crown on the muzzel.  Larry

Ok now your press fit idea makes sense.  I am planning on making the choke removable.  That's why the press fit did not make sense.  Basically what I plan on doing is having the barrel threaded for a standard choke and then making the liner match the choke, thread wise.  For $5 per inch I can definitely afford to try it out.  This is the best idea i have been given so far, thanks larry.
