My first handi
« on: July 08, 2009, 05:17:24 AM »
Just picked up a nice used Handi, .223 with the fluted barrel and syn stock, looks practically new. Tried to mount scope but it hits the hammer so will have to get some higher bases correct? Also what twist are these barrels? Heavy bullets or light. Looks like a really fun gun to roam around the mountains with. Any suggestions welcome.

From the FAQ's  control F to search the page. search: twist

Current production .223 Rem barrels are being made by Marlin with a 1:9" right-hand twist, lands are .219"-.221" and groove is .2240"-.2255". Right now they still have some 1:12" Superlight barrels. (as of 7-5-2007)

How to determine the rate of twist of a barrel....

It's real easy to determine what the rate of twist of a barrel is, all you need is a tight fitting jag and patch on the end of a cleaning rod. Insert the rod in the bore from either end. Push the rod into the bore until you almost reach the other end of the rifling. Wrap a flag of tape around the rod where it enters the chamber or muzzle. Withdraw the rod slowly making sure the rod can rotate freely following the twist of the rifling. When the tape flag has rotated exactly one full turn, measure from the tape to where the rod enters the bore, that is the rate of twist. On some rifles with slow twist like the 44mag which has a 1:38" twist rate, use a half turn of the rod and double the measurement, ie: 2x19"= 38".

Congrats! You'll find several links in the FAQs on scope mounting and hammer modifications to allow you to mount the scope lower.  ;)

Howdy,
I picked up my first Handi rifle a few months ago at a Gander Mountain, here in Texas. It is a very gently used .44 Mag, Synthetic stock, SN HYXXXXXX. I never was crazy about a synthetic stock, but this was a good price and I have found that I like it very well. I put a 4X Weaver scope on it that came with a Marlin 30-30 bought in the early 80's. I love this gun! It is great to shoot! I have a Topper Model Shotgun (My very first shotgun), I bought in the mid 70's, still in great shape. I have already been looking at a Buffalo Classic at a local pawn shop. Man, am I in trouble! I've been reading the forum for a while now and appreciate all the great stories and information.
Thanks
Phillip

Went to the range yesterday, too windy to tell much but at 50 yds all the shots(only shot 5) touched. Popped open once but  shot single barrel trap guns for years so knew I had too much lube on the lug so took care of that. I am going to like this gun, now I need to trade my Krag off for another handi for deer this year. Got my dies(RCBS) and some powder, primers and bullets so am ready to hit the range again next week. All good!

Sounds good, but there should be NO lube on the latch or shelf, they should be clean and dry, see the Handi 101 Basics sticky.  ;)

Welcome to the fold there friend!  Now go out and buy a Buffalo Classic in 45-70 and outshoot all those Sharps at the range.  Get a 357 and teach your kids or wife to shoot. ... Just don't look at Tim's collection or you will get an inferiority complex...... :D

Yes, I know about the lube, my Citori, after wear, would pop open on the first shot of doubles, sure have to hurry up and close to get that second bird. I thought I had wiped it down(the Handi) but must have left a little on it. The sticky's are good info for the new owner. I'm going to try the RTV bedding for the forend,  makes sense to me. I like the synthetic stock and the bull barrel really steadies it up for offhand.
