Primer shortage?
« on: July 09, 2009, 09:40:53 AM »
I know that handgun ammo is hard to get right now due to hoarding, but I have heard that primers are also scarce.  Checked at Cabales online and there are back orders, even on the large rifle primers.  I am not currently handloading, but still have much of my equipment to pursue it down the road.

Why would people hoard primers when it is not expected to be the main target of the Obama administration over loaded handgun ammo?

Thanks.

Reloading items in the upper midwest are showing up more and more everyday! I just picked up 300 large rifle primers the other day! The owner wanted to make more than one person happy so he limited 300 primers per person! He said they are coming in slow but they are coming in! His bullet selection was well stocked ,powder also! Oh yes $3.19 per hundred on primers ! No gouging there! PRIMERS ARE ON THERE WAY BACK! Hang tight if you don't see them yet there coming more & more available!  :)Dale

There was a rumour that Obama was buying up all the ammo himself. There have been many similar rumours about primers.

I just recently got on a state forum and offered trading small rifle primers even up for the same amount of small pistol primers because I hadn't seen any in months and I had some extra small rifle primers.  In my area, I haven't seen small pistol primers on the shelf in months.

People are jsut stocking up & hording because they think Obama is going to take it all away.  Who really knows.

I stopped by my local dealer's shop last Tuesday and he had recently received a shipment of numerous primers. I picked up a box of 1000 CCI small rifle ($29.50). Like 3006bluffhunter above, I'm also thinking primers are on their way back. Hang in there.

I basically ricochet between 2 local shops. They always have something. Last weekend, bought 1k of Rem 7 1/2 BR SR for $30, the weekend before I got 1K of Fed SR Match at the other shop for $41. Both times I left various other SR primers on the shelf. This is all new stock.

I got an E-Mail from Midway yesterday saying they had CCI large rifle primers in stock. I clicked on the link and went there . The on line catalog said in stock ship today. But when I went to check out it said out of stock no back order. So I got none. Don't know what was going on. ???

Beerbelly - They sell out almost as fast as they get them in. I got a notice at 2:30 PM in the e-mail. I did not open it until 5:30 PM. That is when I got home. They got in 300K Remington 7 1/2 and sold them all within 1 hour. I was over two hours too late. Midway does not have a back order, you just have to know when the come in a make a fast order, before they sell them to anyone else. I can not set and wait by my e-mail everyday so I can call in an order right away. One of these days, the guys that are buying them all up will relize they can not shoot up 50K of primers in thier life time and quit buying, so the rest of us can buy some too. I think I have enough to ride it out - I hope.

I was on line and was on their web site within ten min. Unless someone bought the entire stock they got in they should have had some.

LaOtto222...I think you bring up a good point, there is only so much time in our lives where we can consume so much ammo.  I want to get back into handloading centerfire rifles, but not right now with the hoarding of primers.

I find it hard to believe the Democrats will survive another major election, then I hope to get some good deals on primers, bullets, etc. that people will need to get out of the house.

Beerbelly - You have to call. They sell out so fast, they do not post it as in in their site. They just do not bother posting - They are available. Call the next time - right away.

Until recently, I lived in Jefferson City, MO, and had a route I would drive after checking Midway and Grafs online. Northeast to Grafs in Mexico as they have a storefront, then SW to Midway in Columbia to pickup if needed, then stay in Columbia and check a small shop "The Powder Horn", then back to Jeff City. basspro used to be a port of call but they have only one end-cap of reloading stuff in their brand new big Columbia store. Go figure that, when I was able to buy a fair bit of my reloading equipment at bassPro in Independence, MO at good prices. Why a store like BP would have almost no reloading supplies in a big town like Columbia, MO, escapes me. It was a 120 mile loop, so if I did not plan my range time ahead of time, 120 miles of gas and a little time and sightseeing was the price I paid for being disorganized, but I knew I would always round up the supplies I needed at fair prices. An example is 1lb of L'iL Gun powder at Grafs for $18.99 and the same at BassPro for $27.99. I lived in Jeff City almost 6 months before I found another local source on the other side of town called "Bogg's Creek". Midway and Grafs sell primers by the 1,000 carton, Powder Horn and Bogg's sell by the 100 box. Always found what I needed and no gouging...a carton cost $30+, a box costs $3+, exactly 10% of the carton price. Always had at least 2 or 3 brands to choose from. Always surplus primers on the shelf. Good luck.

I was in the country's largest Cabelas store today in Hamburg, PA.  not a single pack of primers, and no 22 mag ammo.
The older I get...The better I was.

I have been in several Cabelas... The one in Hamburg did not seem any larger than some others

I got lucky today at one of my local shops , stopped in for powder and as I'm checking out he asks if I found everything Ok , well I said that he was out of primers like everyone else , : what you looking for : he says .

Long story short , he walks into the back room and comes out with 1000 LP primers from his persomal stash and sold them to me for $21 tax included .  ;D
