1911 in .22 K Hornet
« on: July 07, 2009, 04:31:36 AM »
About 40 yrs. ago with the help of some friends we took an Ithaca 1911 demilled slide and straightened it then welded on 3 1" pieces to make it 8" sleeved the back end of a .45 barrel with one of .22 cal, chambered it for .22 K hornet so the pressure would be reduced when shooting factory hornet ammo, put in a .22lr extractor, bushed the firing pin, fitted a tight bushing and long link, installed an Essex frame ($25 at that time) Wolfe springs made me a long recoil spring for it, cut of the top of a magazine so that on extraction the case falls into the empty mag, put on some target sights and had a pistol that would shoot under an inch @ 100 yds.  Not being auto the trigger is set at about 1 lb. It's really easy to shoot especially if you've shot the 1911 in competition for 50 yrs.  Your hand kinda grows to fit the 1911 frame.

Just thought someone might be interested.  Haven't shot it for awhile but dug it out of the safe and shot some rockchucks last weekend.

Interesting! Not the type of thing that I'd ever do, (Even if I could) but it's gotta be one of a kind!!

Thanks, guys, it's a fun gun to have much handier than a contender.  I also have another barrel in .221 fireball but it has to be downloaded or at least I've never chanced firing a full power .221 in it.

Did you perhaps chronograph any loads?
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.

Hi CJ,  these days 2200 fps with a 40 gr jsp doesn't sound like much but in an iron sighted pistol where I seldom shoot over 150 yds. it shoots very flat, never having to adjust the sights within that distance.  Lately been shooting the 35 vmax at a little more than that but mostly I've shot 40 gr. at 2200.  Very very little recoil.  It doesn't even push back the slide.

That's a pretty cool 1911 and some interesting thinking went into making it.
