Another 700 Remington
« on: June 06, 2009, 01:31:57 PM »
I put a deposit on a slightly used 700 ADL in 7mm Remington Magnum with a 24" barrel & iron sights yesterday.  It also had a Bushnell 3200 3-9X40 mounted in a Leupold 1 piece base and ring set on it.  I got it for $425.00.  I'll probably try to find a walnut CDL or ADL stock for it.

Swamper,

Have you considered a BDL stock in your collection? Here's something different at a great price. The long action comes in Satin finish if you don't like the gloss, but it looks like you might have to channel it out a bit to make it magnum contour. It appears the gloss version can be had with the magnum barrel channel contour. Made by S & K Gunstocks too.

That is a cool looking stock.

Me too Swamper, but your right, it's way expensive. The aluminum chassis inside a Walnut stock is such an excellent idea. I've been drooling over those for a few years now.

Here now is the man who stated on a other post, there was no need for other than a 270 and or 3006, now buying a 7MM.

Now bed the action polish the trigger, and now like the rest of us , a Happy Camper.

I found a CDL stock for $100.00.  Now I need the bottom metal.

This baby has the smoothest bolt operation, & best trigger of any 700 I've ever owned.

I also put a depost on a walnut stocked 700 ADL in .270.  It has the polished bluing, sights, and jeweled bolt.  I may drop it in the CDL stock.  It has a Japanese made Tasco on it that I may at least try out to see how it works.

I love your Remington, but I'm just not warmed up on the Tasco.  Just to let you know, I have seen several fall apart, and then there is one person who I know who has had good luck with his (granted it was only on a light kicking .243).  In any event, it won't hurt to see how it works.  I'm just saying hope for the better, but expect the worst with regards to that scope.

I've never owned a Tasco, but I've heard and read that the old Jap made ones were pretty decent. As far as the new ones, a local gun dealer has three of them lying on his counter that the reticle/lens just loosened up and fell 90 degrees. He quit selling Tascos.

Yes, you are correct.  The earlier Japanese Tascos were actually better.  The one friend who has one that didn't fail (with the .243) had a Japanese Tasco Model.  I am not saying that all Japanese Tasco models will not give any problems, just that at least one did not.  That's why I'm just saying, hope for the better, but expect the worst.

Now, would I personally ever buy a Tasco, even an earlier Japanese made Tasco?  No.  But if a person buys a gun that has an earlier Japanese made Tasco scope, then that's better than buying it with a non-Japanese made Tasco scope (which, if I remember correctly, were later made in China.)

I wouldn't go the Tasco route either, Zachary. Too many "nice, decent quality," low budget scopes out there to take the chance on the Tasco.

The saying "you get what you pay for" generally applies to optics.  That having been said, my 2 favorite "budget" scopes are the Elite 3200 series, and the Nikon Buckmasters.  I know that times are tough, but, in my opinion, if I couldn't at least afford those 2 scopes, I would just wait to save enough money to buy them rather than spend less money on cheaper scopes.  My real favorites are the Elite 4200s, Nikon Monarch, Leupold VXIII, and the Zeiss Conquest, all of which are generally in your $500 price range.  I really don't see the need to spend more money outside of this range within these class of scopes.  I know that the Swarovski and high end Zeiss are better optically, but, at $1,500, I don't think, and no one can convince me, that they are THREE times better.  While the saying "you get what you pay for" applies to optics, so too does the law of diminishing returns.  :)

Japanese made Tasco World Class and World Class Plus scopes were excellent scopes for the money. Tough mechanically and excellent optically. I'd never be afraid of one in good shape and sure wish I had back a couple of WC 6-24 scopes I let go of. I shot some of my smallest groups ever with that pair of scopes. Bad move letting them go with the rifles.

Nice purchase - good scope on it also. Good luck on the stock changeover - as you have found the ADL needs the hardware to make it a BDL / CDL. +1 on the old Japanese World Class Tasco's - however the lens coatings of today's lower price point scopes such as the Pentax Gameseeker or Nikon Prostaff line is better than the old Tasco's for clarity in bright light and use at dusk IMO.

I really like these stocks too....very good looking! And they won't break your wallet either.
