Locking lugs once again
« on: July 23, 2009, 03:39:10 AM »
I have been in touch with TC on a brrel that I have been having problem with.  I took the oppertunity to ask for replacement lugs for my older barrels to which they responded (in no uncertain terms) that if I replaced them, they would not work with a pre 195,000 frame.  I sense that this isn't the general experience here.  True?

Just to be clear, the photo shows the type of lug on all of my barrels.  This is what is referred to as a non split lug, right?

Never heard of that.  I've got split-lug barrels that I shoot on pre-195000 frames all the time.  However, you might run into lock up problems on almost any combination of frames/barrels.  I haven't seen the problems on newer G2/split lug combo's as much as I've seen the problem on old frames in general, whether split lug or not.
A little polishing usually solves the problem anyway.

Hope this helps you in your decision making.

I have a handful of barrels and two frames, one pre 195000 one very post.

I'd like to get everything working with everything.  Unfortunately, I don't seem to be able to see a pattern as to what wors and what does not.

I swapped out the lug (2-piece) from the 22 wmr barrel (shoots on new frame not on old) with an old 1 piece lug.  It then shot with the old but not with the new.

I have a 22 lr that shoots on both.

Thing is that I would sorta like to keep the older frame as-is rather than have holes drilled in it.  Seems that I might just have to assign barrels to frames but that sort of stinks.

 >:(

I shouldn't be angry, I have 2 fine frames and a bunch of fine barrels and everyone is healthy and happy.  This should be the worst problem that any of us have.

Thoughts and commiseration would be appreciated though. ;D

Yes, the photo you show is a solid, or non split lug. I've had the same problem with a later barrel with split lug locking on to my VERY early frame and not opening. Someone on another forum has sent me two of the early solid lugs. Now I need time and the proper punch to remove the retaining pin.
What size punch did you use? I don't have any that small and may have to make one from a drill bit.

Actually it is surplus from a .45 pistol.

I have a couple.  PM me your address and I'll send you one, if you wish.

We have been calling them locking lugs, but I think the correct name is locking bolt.
Properly, the barrel lug is the larger part welded on to the bottom of the barrel that the hinge pin fits thru.
