Squirrel Question
« on: June 25, 2009, 01:57:51 PM »
When selling squirrel pelts, do they buy the pelt with the tail on, or do you just sell the tail only.  If you have the pelt with the tail on, what kind of stretcher do you use?  Are you supposed to turn the fur out or leave it turned in?  Thanks for any help,
Mike

Mike, mepps buys the tails only.
If you have a buyer for the entire squirrel pelt, the pelt is dried like a muskrat with fur side in.
As far as stretchers go,you might try a mink stretcher for the larger ones,a weasel stretcher may work for the reds.
I have never put up a squirrel myself, so I hope we get input from others.

I sell tails to a fly tying place in the UK. All that I am required to do is salt it and dry. The pelts are just like Bogmaster said. I don't go after reds as they are not real common around here. I made my own stretchers. They are about 3 1/4"W x 12" L. I just ripped  2x4s and planed all sides.

Arier Blut, what are you getting per tail. I might start saving them again. Thanks, Worm.

I get $4 US for squirrel tails. Last I heard Mepps was paying $1. Which still isn't bad considering they would be thrown away.

Did some checking on Mepps--the best of the best, premium squirrel tails are worth 26 cents each--if and only if--you have at least 1,000 tails of this quality.
Lesser quality and lesser quantities--a lot less than 26 cents a tail.

That's not good at all. They were $1, 15 years ago. The price of the jigs rose and the price of the tails dropped. >:( Can't say I'd fool with them for around a quarter or  a nickel.  That 1000 does ring a bell though Tom, seems like some fellows were running fiests around here years back and trying to get up 1000 tails. I believe they sent what they considered prime and felt slighted by what payment they got back. To many years back to recall for sure though.

MDCat the only market I have seen lately on the skins in America is in AK. There are a few fellows making parka liners for the Eskimos. I don't know what they are paying, never dealt with them.

I ship to Weissenfels, in Germany. They will only take greys with no red tint. They come out to about $3 after shipping. They will only accept prime. In England again only gray color(can have a little red and not prime) they were giving about $2 last year with shipping factored. Not very much in them but they only take about 10 seconds a piece to put up if you are running a washer of fur anyway.
