By that I mean the old military rifles in the Deer woods, you don’t see to many of them any more, when I was a boy, early sixties you saw plenty of 94,s and 336,s . But it was nothing to come up on some one with an old 03 or 303, when I started hunting it was with an old 303, I mowed a bunch of lawns for that old rifle, My Granddad, always had his 3040 Krag, my Dad had a Marlin 336 back then. But I saw my share of Mauser’s as well as some Japanese and Italian, military Rifles. You did see modern rifles but it was just kind of neat seeing those old warhorses, still going strong. I think the Amish were about the last hold outs, I was still seeing a few of the Amish carrying them in the late 70,s but its very rare to see one today. Don’t get me wrong I would never want to go back to that old 303. Years ago people just didn’t have the money to spend on a modern Rifle and scope, and did the best they could. If you go to Grices gun shop, the story goes that’s how he got his start sporterizing the old 03s in a Gas station as a side line, but those old rifles straight from the arsenal had character.
