Split Necks 17HMR
« on: July 28, 2009, 02:55:52 PM »
With a early box of Hornady 17gr V-MAX  I had seven out of 10 rounds split  the neck and some of the case.
This is a new 24" SS barrel for my Encore.  Was this a problem with early Hornady ammo?
I have not had a chance to shoot any other ammo out of the rifle.

Thanks, Eddie

Lots of possibilities, but yes Hornady did have problems with some of the earier lots of ammo - lots of problems in fact.   TC also had problems with its chambers when they first came out (in the Contender barrels anyway - don't know about Enclores).  You'd think both companies would have it all figured out by now though.

FWIW, I bought a life time supply of the earliest Hornady 17 gr V-Max ammo as soon as they had a final configuration on it.   I have 3 HMR's and none of them have ever had a single problem with that ammo.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

I split some of the early ammo in my Savage, but not in the HMR pistol barrel for my Contender or the much later rifle barrel (Contender).  I don't have any of the early stuff any more, and don't do Encores so can't help with that.

The stories that I have heard was this;CCI made the frist case forming for most USA 17 HMR & machII brass.  They didn't anneal the brass before forming. This resulted in neck spits. All others (over sea's) RWS & Eley did anneal their brass first which resulted in no neck splits. You know about hear say storys.
