Lost a good Friend this week
« on: July 16, 2009, 01:22:10 PM »
I met Slim 5 years ago. He was a cadet with our Fire Dept. He was 17 y/o punk. Couldnt stand him. After High school he became one of our volunteers. A year later he went thru our Paramedic Academy. Long story short  I watched him become a fine young man. He had to work his but off to getthru our academy while working a part time job at night. He ended up getting a girl pregnant. 2 years ago. He manned up & tried to do the right thing. But the girl just made his life  living hell. She had physch issues She tried to stop Slim from seeingthe boy. That just killed him. He tried to get custody, but here in Michigan. The mom could be smoking crack in front of the judge & still get custody. So Slim married the girl & bought a house.
He came in the station one day with his boy Wyatt. He was just as proud as could be. You could tell he was doing a good job with the baby , I asked about the sitution with the girl , He said hes doing what he has to to be with his son. Last week, the girl told him the babys not his , cause shes been cheating on him for the last 2 years. Slim got drunk & put a shotgun barrel in his mouth. It was one of his friends who responded to his house & found him . The news shocked the entire department. Everybody like the kid. I know he took the cowards way out. but that doesnt make it any easier. His funeral is tomarrow. Gonna be tuff. Seems like the only time my Class As comes out is for funerals

I'm so sorry to hear that. Did a memorial for one of mine last month that went the same way; it happens way too much. However he went, Slim was doing his best to be a good man in a bad situation, and that's something worthy of honor.
held fast

Man, I am very sorry to hear that. Sounds like he was a young man with a good heart.

Sad news indeed! My condolences,

I had a brother that did the same thing when I was 14 years old. His girl friend got pregnant and when he found out it was not his he put a shot gun in his mouth also. He killed himself the day before his 21rst birthday while on the phone with my sister. She was never right after that and went through many years of drug problems. She took an over dose and died a few years ago. My parents offered to pay all the hospital bills and raise the child. She went and had it aborted. That crushed my parents. Dale

The funeral was pretty tuff. Way too many young people there. Im still pretty pissed about the whole thing
Im trying to judge him for the 4-5 years that I knew him not the last 5 minutes. As a Paramedic instructor I have alot of young men come thru our class. Alot of them I never see again when they graduate. This kid stayed local.Still cant beleive it
