44 Special WFN PB mold
« on: July 22, 2009, 02:33:53 AM »
Veral,
I would like to purchase a plain base mold for my Ruger flattop 44 special conversion.  I am currently shooting WW bullets cast from my LBT .432-250-WFN-GC mold and they shoot under 1.50 inches at 25 yards.  Actual weight is 260 grains lubed and checked.  What is the lightest WFN PB that you would recommend for this configuration to maintain good accuracy?  Thanks.

I used to sell quite a few 230 gr molds, and will still make them.  No one ever complained of accuracy, yet, I felt it a bit light for best performance on live targets, so stopped the listed weights in my catalog at 240 grains, I believe.

Perhaps what 'I felt' regarding minimum bullet weight is getting too close to  theory though!  The old 44-40, use bullets of 200 gr, and not many user complained of it's killing power.  I've made quite a few 200 gr 44-40 molds and don't recommend heavier for them.  So perhaps I should put no limit on the 44 mag or speical.  I'll make any weight asked for, down to 200 gr.  Lighter than that and accuracy will suffer.
