Silencer on a .22
« on: October 31, 2009, 01:25:53 PM »
Local gun store showed me a Ruger 10-22 rifle with a factory silencer. We went into the basement and fired it twice. Pretty neat!! I didn't know silencers were legal?? Had one of those small red dot sites on it too. Price was close to $700.00 !!!!!

They are legal but there is a extra tax and more indepth background check. The tax is not transferable. Basically the same proces as for a fullauto weapon.

Washinton State has a law that really makes sense ( yea, right ). IF a person obtains the proper Federal Tax Stamp, they can purchase, and legal own a suppressor here...but...it is illegal to attach it to a firearm.

Hey there H/R9mm, thanks for the correction, I didn't know that. SO I guess it's legal to attach and use it as a wall-hanger??
Still a sad state of affairs. Motor-vehicles require a working muffler, so as not to disturb the peace, whats really wrong with a working muffler for a firearm, also to keep from bothering folks with excess noise??

In addition to the cost of the rifle that transfer fee is $200. No dealer in their right mind would sell it to you without you paying that fee and handling the paperwork. Even if they did you'd be liable to BATFE if you take it home without paying the $200. They will have your life history at that point and I think can enter your home to look around and search for it at any time with no warrant. I'm not 100% certain on that but am fairly sure. Not worth the hassle to me.

The way dealers are required to handle the transfer is you purchase the can from them that you want/need. The dealer retains the can and YOU do all the leg work including having your local sheriff sign off of the form 4 after he does a back-round check. Then you send the paper work along with the $200 to the tax office. When the tax office gets around to the paper work after getting the car fixed, house painted, manicure, teeth cleaned, shopping at Maces, getting a divorce, having a garage sale, e.t.c, then they put a stamp on your form 4 and return it to your dealer. That is ALL the tax office does because EVERYTHING is done for them by you before the paper work is submitted. At that time the dealer calls you to come get the can.

A bit of a pain but it's better then the other option  ;D

the  dealer  gets  a letter  from  ATF
telling  him  to prodceed with the transfer  as soon as  posable
and  the    mr.  xyz  is the  now  registered  owner
thats how the dealer  knows to call you

I watched a guy shoot a 10/22 wth an intregal superssor barrel last summer. All I heard was the action cycling. You have to use subsonic ammo to achieve that. I don't want a full auto capable firearm but I would like to have a supressed .22 rifle.

They will have your life history at that point and I think can enter your home to look around and search for it at any time with no warrant. I'm not 100% certain on that but am fairly sure. Not worth the hassle to me.

The part about entering your home is untrue.  It's a popular urban legend, repeated often enough that people are "fairly sure" it's true because they have heard it enough times.  If you have an FFL (a business license, not a C&R), they can enter the address listed as the place of business.  That's the bit of truth that the "they can walk right in" legend is based upon.  If they want to see your silencer, machine gun or short barreled rifle, they have to ask.  They may indicate that declining to show it to them is 'a bad idea', but you don't have to talk to any law enforcement officers without your attorney.  You can show them the gun, answere whatever questions without your lawyer, but that's your choise.  Buying a registered weapon IN NO WAY waves your Fourth Ammendment rights.  Buying a "class 3" item doesn't mean having a "machine gun license" it means you buy a registered weapon.  There is a huge difference.

As for the part about them knowing your whole life's story, yes, they do.  That's true regardless of wether or not you file an ATF form and pay the $200.  Our lives are verry much a matter of record.  Since the Social Security number has become a de-facto identification number, with everything from out credit records, tax records, and health records catalogued by that number, we have no privacy.  If "They" want to know, "They" can find out.  Should any one of us fall under scrutiny for whatever reason, the amount of information at the disposal of those who want to take the time to look it up is comprehensive.

If you want the silencer, buy it.  It won't change your life in any way except that you will be able to shoot without hearing protection and your garden will soon be rabbit free.
