ss109 ammo
« on: July 21, 2009, 11:57:09 AM »
I have seen ammo that is marked: ss109,62gr steel core m855 green tip penetrator" at for sell sometimes. I asked what it was and it USA army ammo. What can this ammo be used for?? can it be used for hunting or varminting?

I don't believe its legal anywhere to hunt big-game with a full-metal jacket. As for varmints ricochet would be a big concern. The only thing I would shoot with'em (besides targets) is fox, bobcat, or anything I didn't want to destroy the hide on. Plus you will need a 1-9 twist or faster to stabilize the ss109 ammo.   Dave

It's basically for target shooting, or shooting through steel plates for giggles.  At one time it was reasonably cheap surplus ammo, then the buying panic happened and every guy out there buying their first rifle suddenly needed to have armor piercing ammo too.
