Year of Manufacture of NEF`
« on: July 17, 2009, 06:00:17 PM »
Please explain, year of mfg in the FAQ's.  They don't make sense.  There is an A, AA and then it says the second letter of prefix which could also be the same letters as the first letter of the prefix.  Can someone clarify please.  I was looking at some new handi's today some had a prefix of C some with H some with N but all are supposed to be brand new guns just ordered and received but the prefixes say different.

I will try.

What you are seeing at the gun shops on new guns are as follows.

The H as the first letter of a two letter prefix means it is an H&R stamped gun.

The N as the first letter of a two letter prefix means it is a NEW ENGLAND ARMS stamped gun.

The C as the first letter of a three letter prefix is the new serial # system that the NEW plant is useing on the guns made after MAY 2008.

The second letter tells you the year of MFG as stated in the FAQs.

Starting in 1940 until 1963 there was no two letter prefix.

In 1964 they went to a two letter prefix until 1985 with the first letter always being the letter A.
That is when the second letter was the year of MFG.

Any gun with a one letter prefix is a 1963 or older gun.

Any gun with a two letter prefix is a 1964 or newer gun.

Any gun with a two letter prefix with the first letter H or N is a 1986 or newer gun with the second letter telling the year of MFG.

So follow this:
A single letter H means it was made in 1947.
A single letter N means it was made in 1953.
A two letter AD means it was made in 1967.
A two letter HD or ND means it was made in 1989.
A first letter C means it was made after MAY of 2008 with the next two letters standing for the different frames ( CBA for SB2 and CAC for SB1)

Who knows what they will do on the to tell the year of MFG on the newest guns.

This is as simple as I can explain it.
I hope it helps.

Once you know the system it really is easy to tell the different years.
I hope I stated all of this correctly.
If not I am sure someone will correct me.
