Randell, I am not familar with cannon terminology being a novice to this interesting hobby. I have entensive experience making molds, however, depending upon what kind of mold you actually need, I may be of service. Mainly, I have produced miniature animals in pewter since 1989. Original sculptures are carved from wood or modeled from clay, depending upon specific needs of the piece. Subsequently, I craft a vinyl silicone mold that is rigid and flexible enough to serve as a mold for casting metals up to 550°F - the mold will endure slightly higher temperatures as well, such as what is required for molten Lead.

Since Double D moved my response to Randell here and made it into it's own thread, I will add a thought that hadn't occured to be before Double D took this action. If anyone would be interested to learn a method for making your own molds for use in casting small balls or projectiles for your cannons, let me know and I will try to put together a video showing the process from start to finish with a list for materials needed at end. I will then post the video in youtube and post the link here in this thread.

This post was made in response to a WTB add. It realy doesn't fit there as the add asked for a PM response--be sure and do that Skip.

The response looks to be a very interesting and I have some questions for you Skip.

What kind tolerance can your method of casting be held to?  Is the accuracy repeatable?

Double D - I will be more careful in future to follow pm requests and other forum protocol. Sorry for the mistake. I'm brand new here as you know.

To answer your questions:
I will address your questions generally, first, and then more specifically.

Molten metals shrink on cooling for obvious physical reasons.
Accuracy then, from casting to casting, will depend upon mass or cross-section of the casting. More mass equals more shrinkage. The metal may not shrink uniformly, especially when the casting exceeds whatever the mass limit might be for the particular alloy. Some alloys shrink or deform less than others and so if you want to cast small cannon balls, for example, it would be good to consult a professional metallurgist for advice which alloy to use. From there, you can get the alloy and start casting. Shrinkage can be minimized and sometimes controlled or prevented via fast quenching of cast pieces. Possibly makers of musket balls in the old days, cast them and quenched immediately in cold water to keep diameters to accepted limits. Of course, a cannon ball could be cast larger than needed and allowed to shrink down to target size as well. The smaller your ball, the less affect shrinkage will have.

Since my purposes have always been art or sculpture oriented, I would say we'd have to do some small experimentation to find out whether the casting process I am familiar with would work for cannon balls. My guess is that up to 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch, possibly a full inch, accuracy and repeatability would be excellent and doable. Beyond those sizes we will start getting into shrinkage issues and have to become creative to prevent or overcome it via quenching etc.

It doesn't fit here either as he is not a paid sponsor of this site and is offering commercial services at a price.

I have editted his posts and remove the commercial offering aspects.  It's the process we are interested in.

From what I see in the repsonse I don't think it would be applicable to cannon projectiles.  You would need to hold your accuracy with a repeatability of .001 an a minumum.

What does: "od t ha tSkip" mean ???

When the Watervliet Arsenal cast a 2 pdr for me, the mould was oversized and the cast iron cooled and shrank to fit. The difference between the mould and finished product was appreciable. What the mould was patterned from, would not fit in the bore but the projectile in cast iron, had proper windage.

I think I understand it with the editing. "od t ha tSkip" means, "Be sure and do that Skip". Thanks!

Again I apologize for breaking forum rules if that is what I have done. I did not join this forum to do business or make money. I am a brand new miniature cannon enthusiast and that is all. I saw one person asking about a mold to cast what I presume is a projectile for a cannon. I have since learned, thanks to Double D that I was supposed to reply to that person by PM, which I have done. Now it seems I have broken other rules attempting to answer more questions about this process. My offer to produce a video showing the molding/casting process step by step was not a commercial offer but a sacrificial offer since I would invest my own time and expertise to produce it as a favor to anyone here that would like to learn how to mold and cast for yourselves. I can assure you all that projectiles have indeed been cast and it is easily done but keep in mind, the projectile must be small enough to avoid shrinkage issues as mentioned in my previous post. If alright with you all, I will not discuss mold making or anything else that I know how to do any further. I am here to learn about cannons and charges and everything about BP safety etc.  Helping others has been somewhat irresistable for me and so I always jump right in to do so when I can. In this case, it seems best that I refrain from that practice. Graybeard, I salute you, Sir, and am delighted to discover that you are Christian. I hope this post makes sense to everyone.

The commercial aspect was reference to your business, I have removed them.

Your offer to show us mould making is very welcomed and I ask you to proceed.  The casting aspect may not be applicable to one are of our hobby but may be well and good in others.

I know we have some here dabbling in the lost wax process. You might be able to help them with their efforts, and they with yours.

I got photos showing step by step how to produce a silicone mold from a master if you are interested
but the pictures are so big that I could only attach one to every post if I should show them here .
maybe if anyone more is interested, or email me and I will send them to you .
