hand lubing
« on: July 19, 2009, 01:35:03 AM »
i bought some bullets from one of the listed manufacturers...lyman 319247...170 gr FN for my 32 Special...PB bullet, and asked for them unsized cuz i wanted to try them a little fatter, and they came to me unlubed and unsized. I know i have read on these forums about lubing bullets by hand using automotive grease, and am sitting here looking at this tin of lube made by Sexauer that is used to lube faucets and valve stems in the plumbing trade....it's white grease that they claim to be waterproof and heat proof. Anybody ever tried this stuff or have an opinion?I also have a couple hundred lyman 311440 bullets....150 gr FNGC .309 diameter and would like to try em in my 308 Handi rifle at around 2000 fps or so....anybody ever tried this bullet in the 308?

You may have leading and accuracy problems with those plain base bullets at 2000 fps.  I would start with 1400 fps with your plumbing lube and work up from there.  You might get good performance at 1800 fps but I would expect 1600 fps to be the limit.  If that doesn't work, try one of the convetional Alox/beeswax bullet lubes.

I have not found a powder better than Alliant Reloder No. 7 for such loads.  Another option is paper patching .308 lead bullets.  Good luck.

i don't intend to shoot the PB faster than 1600fps....the 2000 fps was for the .30 caliber FNGC bullets in the .308..they are lubed and sized.I'm also not 100% sure the appropriate distance "off the lands" for bullet seating with cast bullets in a rifle....what do you guys try for in reference to this?

If the 308's have a crimp groove , thats were I'd seat them , if not keep them around .050 off the lands and work from there just like you would do with a jacketed bullet .
