First PWS black bear
« on: June 17, 2010, 04:00:59 PM »
I got my first bear out of whittier on tuesday. A couple of buddies and me went out of whittier to do some fishing/camping/bear hunting. Spent the first night fishing, two tiny halibutt and a few cod. Fishing wasn't great but was a great evening on the water.

Spotted a bear as we motored into a bay looking for a beach to set the grill up on. Ran the boat around a little point and I hopped out of the boat wearing sandles and shorts and rifle in hand. By the time I got back around to where I had saw the bear he was in the trees. He popped back out into the open at around 300 yards across the bay, I had a nice solid rest on a rock outcropping, as soon as it turned broadside I took the shot. 168gr TSX ouf of my 300 RUM. He rolled down a litle way and lay still. Gave the tell tale death moan, kinda freaky sounding.

Only down side was the hillside was a lot steeper than it looked and had to climb up and lower him down with a rope. I only had 150 foot of rope so it took two times to get him to the beach. Found a decent sany spot to skin and cut him up.   Around 6' bear with an excellent hide, getting a rug made.

Here is another pictures.  That first picture makes him look like a real brute.    For scale purposes I'm 6'3" and weight in over 350 pounds.

Thought it was a Glock, mine is a SF21 in 45 ACP with a lone wolf barrel as well.

Its funny how good camo isn't really needed up here.  Other than the fact that most good weather proof gear generally comes in camo I wouldn't use hardly any camo.

Nice bear.  Have you ever had to use that 10mm on game?  I've been reading more about those and half wish my state would allow them for hunting deer.

A buddy of mine used his 10mm to dispatch a 5.5' black bear that was still alive after being shot with a 50 boewolf.  2 shots penetrated from neck to out the far ham.  Complete penetration for both shots.   I have used the 10mm for deer hunting, its particularly well suited for close range hunting like stalking a corn field.  If you can shoot it well enough it makes a fine close range hunting round, less than 50 yards.

Greetings,

I suspect I will regret this, but what does "PWS" stand for?

Well, I missed the boat entirely - I was trying to make it into some sort of "Wildlife Service"
I guess Virginia is too far away to be familiar with the territory, eh?

If you have any stories about using the 10mm, I'd sure like to hear how it performed.

Thanks, and congrats again.
