Mueller formulas
« on: July 26, 2009, 10:23:59 PM »
Okay help me understand Muellers formula for 3 new mortars.

Mueller calls out dimensions for mortar bases in two sections, upper and lower. The upper sections have mouldings.  If I were to just build a rectangular block for a mortar with a 3.62 inch bore based on the dimensions from Mueller, I get the following dimensions.

First mortar base

Bore   3.62
length   21.72
width    8.446666667
height    12.1632

Second Mortar base

Bore   3.62   0.120666667
length   19.30666667
width   7.481333333
height    9.05

Third mortar
Bore   3.62
length   17.49666667
width   6.757333333
 height    5.43

Does this look right?

It's funny that you should bring this up, I was looking at this Friday night and thinking the same thing,
I am wondering if this was an 18th century typo......

Allen,

I was wondering if I was reading the ratios correctly.

Here's what I came up with for a golf ball mortar.

Bore   1.68
length   8.12
width   3.136
height    2.52

Looking at your numbers for the first mortar base, I agree with the length and width but disagree on the height.  The first column shows 28 (/30) as the thickness of the lower bed and 28 (/30) as the thickness of the upper bed.  Adding the two gives 56/30 times 3.62" gives 6.757".

The height I get for the second one is 6.033".  I agree with your height for the third.

Called the wrong cells on the excel spread sheet.  Got the application; execution like my typing leaves a lot to be desired.
