Williams FP-1885 for Browning/Winchester 1885
« on: July 01, 2009, 08:43:20 AM »
I have a quick question on the sight. I have a new rifle and need to add the sights to it. I have other rifles with the tang sight and would like to put a receiver sight on this one because it would allow me to grasp the full grip of the rifle and swing it up to a hunting position with full grip control of the stock. I like the tang style for range shooting but I really like the receiver aperature sights for hunting. While I understand I am losing the authentic apearance and appeal of the rifle by adding a modern receiver sight, I want to try using a receiver sight first.  Also, being the site uses the rear scope mounting screws for mounting, I can always change it out without damaging the rifle. Does anyone have experience with the Williams FP-1885? If so, where can I get a good price on one?

I have had the same idea for my Traditional rifle and Creedmoor - some day.  I forget why (inspection?) but I took the Marbles Tang sight off and was suprized how much better or easier rifle handling felt with a sure grip on neck of straight grip stock; like rifle was a whole pound lighter or something.  Some experience with rear sights - they may affect the optimal height of the front sight, (depending on what that is), the bullet, powder load, point of impact, etc..  I also prefer the FP-1885-TK version with the target knobs (TK).  Midway and Williams are good sources, probably Brownells and Buffallo Arms too.
