Look what my silly son did!!
« on: April 03, 2009, 12:21:35 PM »

He's road kill for sure! '03 ZR900 Ninja. He wants me to ride it, but I told him the truth. "Hell no! I'm afraid of those things." To make matters worse it's his first bike! Not a good choice IMHO. I'll stick with my slow cruiser.

It's not the bike you ride, it's Doris in her Dodge Dart trying to kill you that's the problem.

I disagree swampy,
I used to have a snowmachine that went from zero to in trouble in six seconds, crotchrockets are the same thing. On a cruiser 80 to 90 starts to feel pretty fast, on a rocket you are only in third gear and still climbing. I would be dead right now had that been my first bike, no doubt.

Doris has tried to get me several times Swampman. But this thing is a rocket. Plus, he's always been a little accident prone. Always living on the edge type. It makes sense he would get something that needs a fuse. :D

Hopefully he'll have a non-injury incident that'll show him the dangers of bikes in general and especially that kind when ridden by inexperienced youth.

That is exactly what my dad said when I told him that I got a rocket bike. But mine is a '96 250 ninja. I have only ridden it once, as it needed the carb rebuilt(done know that my bowl gaskets are here), and needs tires really bad. I was offered this bike and could not turn it down. So far I have $300 in it. Yes they are fast but at least for me 75mph was plenty and I really didn't feel the need to go any faster. I hope your son stay safe, doesn't get hurt, and uses that thing that goes in that brain bucket.

P.S. I really love the Suzuki helmet on the Kawasaki bike. That shows good brand loyalty.

I gave him a hard time about the helmet/bike names too. ;D The helmet belongs to a friend of his. He ordered one that I'm not sure if it has come in yet. I'm not as worried about him as I was. He got married in August (he's 25) and his new better half keeps him in line pretty well.

There is no doubt about it. Riding a bike like that is very, very exciting.

150 hp, 160hp with ram air at speed and 175+mph depending on his weight. Tell that boy to be careful! On the plus side they are very balanced and extremely easy to ride. It's just a whole lot of power for a first, second or third bike.  I had one for about 3 years. I can honestly say it was the safest bike I ever drove as far as the handling, power is a different story. I do like cruisers and have a couple. But the crotch rockets are a blast if you need an adrenaline rush. The only reason I got rid of it was to get a faster one.

For whatever reason, around here a green bike is bad luck.  Hope again that he's senseable on that thing.  Never was into that whole sleek, sporty styling nor is the need for speed there.  I like to see what I'm riding past.

Now I gotta wonder what he was thinking getting one of those, and a 900 to boot, as a first bike?   Hate to say it but that's an accient waiting to happen.

There was only one reason I did not go 150+ mph on my bikes when I was a kid.  It was because I didn't have a bike that would run 150+ mph!!!

Requardless how many times you tell him to be careful he will find out how fast that bike is.  If it can go 150 you can bet the farm he will too!!!

Oh yea.
I bounced off 130 a couple times.  Man, things get crazy at that speed (for me, anyway).  Had a friend of mine tell me the other day his son got busted for 156 mph on his rocket.  The bike is now sold.  Think that is a good idea.

I have owned more bikes than I can remember.  Started on my first minibike at age 4.  YES 4.  I lost a few friends to motorbike crashes and know first hand that a young man has no business on a motorcycle that can go the speeds these things can do today.

The boy is  25 and married. Jusy give him some good advice and let it go. Lets all just hope he learns right and has some good sense. I know if someone had started telling me what to do when I was that age I would have bowed up bigtime and so would most of you guys. Green bikes aren't bad luck just bad color in my opinion. I used to ride with a old hand who would not ride in a group that had a green bike because he believed the same thing.

Well, I got a chance to ride with him last weekend. We rode over the mountain from Gatlinburg to Cherokee NC and down to Bryson City and back, about 200 miles total. He impressed me with his skills. He kept up with me with no problem at all. He will be taking his rider saftey course soon and I think he will do OK as long as he maintains a level head. He did a little hot dogging, but not enough to draw Dad's ire. :D

Last year while visiting my folks in Tennessee, I had driven the Gold Wing from Dallas Texas, to Hendersonville Tennessee.  My nephew Danial came over on one of those crotch rockets.  A Suzuki 1200 or 1300 something or other.  He wanted me to try it, so we swapped bikes.  I rode about half way around the block and my back went to hurting so bad I had to stop.  I got back on the Gold Wing and continued.

Later that evening the Suzuki got away from Danial and he went end over end.  Danial later said he just cranked on it too hard.  Danial slid down the pavement, hit the bricks around the end of a driveway, bounced into the ditch.  EMTs put him on a back board and sent him to the hospital.  Danial lost a chunk of meat out of his posterior about the size of a two pound roast.  Bike was totaled.

While it was not the bikes fault, riding that type of bike makes young men feel invensiable.  Just like my Cushman Eagle made me feel when I was 16, 17, and 18.

Talked to my brother living in Dallas this morning.  His son's business partner, and roommate all through college, was riding with some friends Friday evening.  The young man had just bought a bike.  He was in the process of making a left turn, and stopped, when he got hit from the rear.  My brother said it was another bike that hit him.  Any way the young man went flying off the bike and hit his head on the pavement.  No helmet, chunk of skull missing when the EMTs picked him up.  He was pronounced dead at the hospital.  It does not matter that he was riding a new Crotch Rocket type bike, what mattered was the absence of a helmet.

As you can tell I am a firm believer in helmets.  Rog

I don't wear a helmet, but I do believe that in a crash they will increase your chances of survival greatly. Especially when hit from behind like he was.
