A "serious" bowling ball howitzer.
« on: July 21, 2009, 10:39:09 PM »
Note recoil system.  Listen for the sound of a bowling ball flying fast.  I'd like to have that range in my backyard!

That gun is pretty neat,  I'd like to see his letter from ATF allowing that build!

I should have mentioned it is a muzzle-loading blackpowder "antique" item, even though it is painted OD and made to look kinda like a WWI 4.5" British field howitzer.

It's not Antique, it doesn't replicate a pre 1899 gun.

Thanks DD. Maybe you could clarify something?

I've always been under the impression that if I made a muzzle-loading cannon of any bore size, which used black powder in bags or loose, there was no problem with doing so anywhere in the US.

That's why, for instance, SEACOAST can make a 16-inch BP-ML mortar that shoots half-ton projectiles which could crush a house, and do so without fear of exceeding their authority.

The Final word on that of course comes from ATF.

That being said this is what we accept on this forum.

1.  Any firearm not designed or redesigned for using rim fire or conventional center fire ignition with fixed ammunition

and

2. Manufactured in or before 1898...or replica thereof, whether actually manufactured before or after the year 1898)

or

3. Any firearm using fixed ammunition manufactured in or before 1898, for which ammunition is no longer manufactured in the United States and is not readily available in the ordinary channels of commercial trade.

We came up with this board rule after several reports in the media of people with bowling ball mortars made from welding tanks and set up with Stokes mortar mounting gear being arrested and charged by ATF.

Seacoast can build, shoot and discuss their because the Mortar theyare making replicates a mortar made before 1899.

If the guy had built his gun to look like a French 75, no problem here

You can read our discussion on th is board rule at:  http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,105055.0.html

I should add that we have always allowed questionable item to be posted once a letter has been provided from ATF saying the items are allowed.

The type of gun that comes to mind are the signal gun using blanks, usually shotgun blanks, to make noise. Some where buried on the board is a letter from ATF saying these are signal  guns and not destructive devices.

When I first looked at the BB howitzer in the video, the concept struck me as either a French 75mm idea or British 4.5 howitzer, could really be either, in fact the carriage arrangement is more like French 75, but until someone interviews the builder, we won't know exactly what he had in mind.  I would not think the Feds would be concerned with the carriage arrangement, but I don't talk to them very often.

One time on another forum, a guy said that it was illegal (Federal law) to make a cannon with a bore larger than the original of what was being replicated. Before answering said guy, I sifted through the laws as best I could and found nothing about scale mentioned anywhere. Guy in question couldn't quote chapter & verse either.

Has anyone found anything to the contrary?

Even if legal, I wouldn't feel comfortable owning a Mountain Howitzer with a water heater size bore...

This is exactly why we took the stance we took on discussing ATF regs.

Actually the design is from the U.S. 105mm howitzer,  split trail and shield style very close 16in. wheels are from Dodge weapons carrier most likely , French 75 & wwI 4.5 Brit had solid trail.
