Why is AARP in favor of the nationalized health care plan?
« on: July 20, 2009, 10:51:56 AM »
Have you seen an explanation of why AARP is in favor of the health care plan? I'm puzzled that they would support it. The theory is that the plan fills the "donut hole" in the current plan that causes reduced coverage for many seniors, but I don't see how it will be a good thing in the long run.

Considering the fact they have not read it...I can only assume it's pure politics and their spokesman are idiots.

Imagine...supporting something you have not read...that's amazing.

aarp IS bs!

Looked into their auto ins. NOT!!!! It was 300 dollars more than a local agency! for the same coverage

Life Ins.     Not!!!!!

They are an organization that is now a public bureaucracy and political in nature. They help themselves to your money!

There should be HC plan for older citizens for and by Citizens but aarp wont/cant come up with anything that is not a blight on the very people they espouse to help!

Old people already get free health care.  As a matter of fact anyone in this country can get free health care by going to the emergency room.

AARP's reply.

Thank you for contacting your AARP headquarters on the issue of gun
control. We appreciate hearing from you.

The AARP policymaking process is a long one, beginning in September
and continuing through February annually. AARP's National Legislative
Council thoughtfully develops each policy after reviewing the pros and
cons and makes recommendations to the Board. Public policies are
reconsidered and voted anew each year. Input from members like you,
along with other members' suggestions, are carefully reviewed and
contribute to establishing AARP priorities.

At this time, our policymaking process results indicate that a large
majority of our members support careful handgun control measures.
Therefore, AARP continues to support measures to control the
availability of handguns. Some of the rationale includes the
following facts: Handguns continue to present a serious threat to
citizens of all ages. Handguns are a leading cause of accidental
injury and death, especially for children. Handguns are frequently
used to commit violent crimes. U.S. Census Bureau figures show year
after year that handguns are responsible for two out of three of
murders. In 1999 (the latest figures available), 28,874 deaths were
due to firearm injuries. At a time when having enough resources to
provide adequate healthcare for older Americans is a special concern,
the medical costs of treating gunshot victims exceeds $1 billion a
year.

The prevalence of random violence featuring handguns in some
neighborhoods has resulted in numbers of older people becoming virtual
prisoners in their homes. Increasingly, families are suffering the
loss of children and grandchildren who are the victims of violent
crimes and senseless shootings.

AARP policy does not preclude gun ownership for responsible citizens.
Our policy states:

"The federal government must continue to control the availability of
handguns and semiautomatic and automatic weapons. Congress should
reinstate the Brady law's five-day waiting period and should leave in
place the assault weapons ban. States should enact legislation that
prohibits the possession of handguns by juveniles, requires adults who
own handguns to keep them away from juveniles, and prohibits the
possession of guns by convicted domestic abusers."

I hope this information has been helpful. While you may disagree with
the Board on this particular policy, we hope that many other issues,
objectives, and services of AARP so beneficial to older Americans
encourage you to remain a valued member of the association. We
appreciate your participation.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if there is any way your
headquarters staff may be of assistance in the future. Thank you
again for taking the time to get in touch. It is always a pleasure to
respond to the concerns of a member.

I joined AARP, then found out they were for gun control then resigned.  They called me several times wanting to know why I resigned, and I told them.  They thought I was being unreasonable.  I will not join them and trash all the literature they send to my residence.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Notice how they blame the "gun" for things as opposed to people. Wow, what ignorance. As long as they get their Motel-6 discount that's all that matters I guess.   :P

I agree. AARP is for some abstract provision of health care for everyone, but cannot articulate any details.  Because they don't know the details, and most projections are regarded as cost-prohibitive.

Glad you told me that. Care to elaborate on how to find it? I qualify as "old people" as does my wife and we damn sure haven't found any that is free.

AARP is crap! The new health deal will take health care away from me.  They will cut medicare in a big way. That will leave me at 70 years old to pick up the difference. AARP is not out to help old folks like me, they are out to get your money!

AARP will back anything Obama wants.  I doubt AARP has ever seen a government program or a proposal to expand governmental bureaucracy it didn't support.

Thanks. I had no idea of what AARP actually does. I assumed it was in favor of the elderly. This position does make some sense in that seniors are in a position to ask for as much assistance as possible from the government. The part that doesn't make sense is that more of their money will need to be spent, and they will ultimately lose big time to rationing of medical assistance.

Entirely false statement

That is a false statement I deliver to medicaid patients everyday that pay nothing for their medical care and nothing for their medicine!

If they aint getting it then their acorn representative has not shown them how to register for it.

Only elderly that had good incomes and pay taxes out the wazoo pay for their medical care and medicine and the presidents plan will exclude them or at least limit what they can expect due to their age!

And if its so good a plan why does congress and the president want no part of it for themselves !!!

I will repeat....they have not read it yet.  They are not smart on this topic or what's in the health care package.

It's impossible to support something you have no idea what's in it.

There were also people supporting the "stimulas package" that did not read it...they wish they would have now.  This HC package will be unavailable to read it all...and it's not even wrote yet...only thing we know for sure is Congress does not want it for themselves.

It's only logical AARP does not know what they are talking about yet when they say they support it.
Nobody does.  That makes it pure politics...nothing else.

AARP does not have a clue what they are supporting.  Neither do I...yet....it COULD pass before any of us get to read it all.  Hope it does not.  But more than likely...it's a lot of rationing because there is no money for anything like this at this time.

TM7 I understand fully about medicare and medicaide. I also undertsand that there are 47 percent of the people out there that dont want medical insurance no matter what it costs and they dont wanna be fined if they opt out!

I aint saying that I like the present system (hell there aint no system)! What I'm saying is the socialist system is proven not to work ! and aarp is a bunch of capitalist making fortunes on the backs of elderly and not so elderly Americans. I am also saying This program aint about medical care its about government control! Has anyone checked to see what the government watchdog agency that checks this stuff says it will cost? It will make your present taxes look like a tax cut!!!

anybody here ever see the government manage anything to help US ? wake up and smell the coffee if you think the government healthcare system will be any better then the medicare/medicaid programs, and as for free, don't worry you'll only pay for it all your working life and then when you get old and need it the most it'll surely fail you just like the existing system.
