Well, I spotted a 30-30 Ilion made Handi used yesterday for $185 so it followed me home. The only scope I had that would clear the hammer for sure in the rings I had around was an old Bushnell Banner 2 1/2X so I put that on this morning, and went to the range. It outshot my Winchester 94 AE XTR quite easily. I was just shooting at 50 yards, and had some Saeco 180 FN cast bullets that I had loaded over some various charges of some old IMR 4227 that a guy had given me. Groups (5 shot) with all loads ran under 1 1/2", and some were closer to 1", and were generally round in shape so I think we are off to a good start. The trigger is heavy, and I can see the forend could use some bedding attention, but I think this is going to be a fun gun to work with. Sorry no pictures yet. I've got some medical issues I'm dealing with, and I was just too beat when I got home.

I was kind of surprised that it had been sitting around there for a couple of weeks. It is very clean, and I think I put more rounds through it today than the original owner did. Now I'm tempted to pick up a 45-70 to go with it. The gun shop here in town just called, and said that they have a used 30-06 Handi in, and will be selling it for $135....... Does the old '06 work well in a Handi? If I wasn't so beat tonight, I would head over there.

Now that you've got the .30-30, You NEED the .45-70,...... should have the '06,........ and don't forget to pick up a .357 and ream it to Max.  I wish I had those kinds of prices around here.  The frames alone are worth almost that.  The .30-30 will tighten up and do that at 100.  You've got a great start, keep goin'.

Ask member "Sourdough" if the 30-06 works OK in a Handi. Hw has a few wolves at 500 yards (and perhaps 600 yards?) to prove it does....<><....:)

P.S. If you don't want that $135 dollar Handi I do!!!! I say get it, and quickly...

My handy just loves 180 grn bullits.I'm using rem.corelocts and the load data from the Sierra hand gun reloading manual. My Handi is shooting these within 1 inch at 100 yds.

The gun shop is in Newport, NH.

Well, I cleaned the trigger on my Handi up a bit, and lightened the pull as well. The forend was really tight against the receiver, so I opened the hole up one drill size, and now it slides on with just light resistance, and the barrel stud is still in contact with the hole. One trick I used on getting the really rounded pins out of the receiver was to use nail sets for punches to start them. The hollow in the end of the puch keeps them from sliding off. I had one the right size for both the pin sizes that need to come out to get the trigger housing out. Now I'll go shoot it again. I think the lighter trigger will tighten my groups some. I was switching between my CZ .22, and the Handi 30-30 when shooting last time, and the huge difference in triggers was messing me up a bit.

I agree with Marv - another Handiholic. I too, have found a nail punch is ideal for drifting pins in the Handi frame. I sure wish prices were like that around here. I think the word has got out here about the Handi rifles so they command higher prices. :( I rarely see used ones at all

The little gun shop that has the 30-06 has a set policy for buying guns. They give 40% of MSRP, and usually mark things up 10%, or so. Good place to buy, but not so great to sell to. Kittery Trading Post (KTP.com) is a much larger place, and is where I bought the 30-30. You can view all their used guns online, and get a better idea of their prices. I've found them to be very nice folks to deal with.

Not shooting worth a darn!!!!
« Reply #15 on: August 15, 2009, 03:38:20 PM »
Well, I took the Handi to the range today with some more cast loads, and it wasn't shooting worth a darn with anything I had loaded. I had lightened the trigger, tweaked the forend, and had even installed a better 4X scope. Oh well, I thought, back to the drawing board. When I took the gun out of the case at home the scope darn near fell off! I had mounted the scope, and had just tightened the rings lightly on the base with my fingers, and then I got interrupted. Just goes to show you that we all can do such things no matter how many times we have done them before. I expect it will shoot a lot better next time. Now I'm actually very surprised at how well it did shoot! :D

Welcome aboard, and congrats on the great deals you have found.  I just traveled a bit to a gun show today.  They had two NEF's in the building, one was a shotgun, well used and the other was a 06 ultra for just under $400.00.  Getting hard to find used ones around these parts.

I don't see a lot of used Handi's around here either, but they are usually priced pretty reasonably when I do. One gun store I frequent only stocks the youth models, but another usually has a good variety in stock.

I sure felt pretty foolish about the scope mount when I got home! I don't have a clue why I didn't check that at the range. I got one group about 1 1/2" so I guess I didn't suspect that. I shot the same loads in a Winchester 94, and knew the loads were pretty good. I was shooting Lyman's 311316 cast bullet over Unique powder in mild to warm 32-20 duplication loads (up to 1800 + fps.) and I guess I thought the gun just didn't like the short bullets. Now I have to go shoot those loads again.......... OH DARN!
