Model 94 XTR
« on: July 27, 2009, 04:26:45 PM »
I have a question for the old winchester owners.   Did the XTR Models in .356 and .375 ever come in top eject models or were the always AE.  I am curious because I would like to fine one if it was a top eject without a rebounding trigger.  Thanks ahead.

fknipfer,

I'm not too up on the lever actions, but I think the big bore Model 94 XTR came out in 1979 with top eject and they weren't changed over to the angle eject until 1984. I would guess that any pre 1984 XTR is more than likely a top eject.

Just for an example, here is a big bore XTR that has top eject:

The .375 Winchester BigBore 94 was introduced in Sept 1978, as a top-eject - all Winchester had at the time.

The .375 chambering was discontinued at the time both the .307 Win and the .356 Win were introduced in the BB94AE - which at that time had no extra safeties, etc (except for the lever safety Winchester's had forever).
The crossbolt and tang safeties w/rebounding parts came much later.

I seen some folks speak of an BB94AE chambered to .375, but I've never seen one, in person, listed anywhere, or ever offered for sale.

When I read this post I went to my safe and pulled out my 94BB in .375WCF. Mine is a top eject without the rebounding hammer. serial # BB007XXX FWIW.. It got me to thinking, back in '84 a friend of mine was looking for a lever to hunt deer with in Nortnern WI. He settled on a Big Bore .375. While I have not been in contact with him for many years, I did mount the scope for him, using weaver mounts on top of the reciever, making that one an AE. My memory also says it did not have a cross bolt saftey, as I detest such things on a true lever.Guess I'm one of those "Old Winchester Guys". So if the change to safety came around that time he was able to get one during the transition.
I have all the old catalogs from Winchester, going back to, I believe the late 70's. The only problem is there packed away somewhere hard to get at. If I can get around to it I will see about having a look. If I find anything more, I'll post it. Damn it, I hate it whan this happens. Crash87

As I posted, I've never seen one, Headache -  and I'd sure like to.

Could you please post a pic of yours, angled to show the barrel's cartridge stamp and the top of the action (type)  in the same pic ?

Thanks.

I have a 1894-1994 94AE BB .356 century model, it has a cross bolt safety and a rebounding trigger.  I wished to h$)) I had never bought it.  It shoots fine in fact first group I ever fired with it measured .58" and 100yds scoped and off of a bench with 220gr rounds.  Never fired that good with the Winchester 200gr rounds.  I hate that rebounding trigger and safety, whoever thought of that should be tarred and feathered.

I have tried to sell it and even trade it off but some people were smarter than me.  It looks like it has been whipped with a ugly stick.  I think it probably will last forever as it knows I hate it, but not enought to give it away.  If anybody would like to see it, look  firearms and ammo sale this forum.  I have a really nice Marlin 375 with no safety just like the originals so I guess I have to keep both.

Here is a 94ae in .356 that I just picked up recently. It was made in 1983, as I am told that only in 1983 did Winchester supply the 94ae's with that huge monte carlo style buttstock. As you can see in the pictures, no safeties and NO rebounding hammer! I looked long and hard to find one pre safety and with the normal time-tested 94 action. Only thing I wished is it was checkered, as I like that better.

Also, I am reprinting data here from another site (link is:  http://shootersforum.com/showthread.htm?t=20221&highlight=firing  ) that brings some clarity as to when Winchester came out with the Angle Eject, etc. I believe it is quite informative..........

Adding just a bit more information from various threads around this Forum. I have looked at these four "truths" pretty closely and believe they are true.
There were 19,000 Angle Ejects made in .375 Winchester.
Rebound hammer came in 1981. (not true, see below paragraph)
Angle Eject started in 1983.
Monte Carlo Stock was available only in 1983.
Angle Eject serial numbers started: AE 1001 to AE 19000.
After 1984 Big Bore rifles serial numbered with the other Model 94's.

Since my original post I picked up a 307, AE 125XX. It's an '83 version with the monte carlo stock, factory installed steel weaver style scope bases, swivel studs and a non-rebounding hammer.
I agree with your research and "truths", except the one about rebounding hammers. The "New Improved Trigger Mechanism", with rebound hammer, was announced in the 1985 Winchester catalog. So I'm guessing they were added in late '84 production.

I recently dug threw my modernized filing system, (cardboard boxes, and plastic totes) and dug out some old Winchester catalogs. Not to take anything away from what has been posted, as some of the information is different, just another take. There are some voids as I didn't go through all the files, (cardboardboxes, etc.) this starts in 1981

1981-82 Shows 94 as we knew it then, BB-XTR only in .375.
1983- missing, but nov. '83 issue of Shooting times introduces the new angle eject also chambered in the new 307 & 356, along with .375. Also new rifle has the monte carlo hump.
1984?
1985- XTR monicker & all thing associated are gone. Now called standard BB carbine. No frills stock, no chex, etc.  Rebounding hammer is mentioned & still shows the monte carlo hump
1987?
1988- .375 WCF is no longer cataloged, Mote carlo hump now gone too.
1989?
1990-Shows the now new receiver hammer block safety.
1991-1997 Big bore 94 307 & 356, No real changes.
1998 444 Marlin added
1999?
2000- shows only the 444 Marlin, 307/356 gone.

According to the catalogs, we can say that the angle eject model .375 was produced for aprox. 5 to 6 years. 1983-1987/88?
The monte carlo hump stock was there for approx. the same amount of time.
375 WCF with reciever safeties are out there but I would say not in great numbers, as it shows up in 1990, possibly '89 when the 375 was no longer cataloged, But still produced to use up remaining parts/inventory.
This is, in no way definitive, as catalogs sometimes differ from actual production runs but, gives a little insight to the past. CRASH87
