28 ga. slug creation
« on: July 22, 2009, 10:19:03 AM »
I am knocking about ,with little knowledge and no experiencce , trying to learn how to satisfy my quest for a 28 gauge slug. First of all ,to swadge or cast? My objective is for very limited out put so I could go with a very slow method.I intend to use a modified choke barrel 26" L. That in itself may disqualfy my effort or it may just add a factor to be dealt with.I would like the increased weight available in a 28 ga. projectile, over a .410 slug but I wondered at the wide range of sizes actually available in .410 cal. and thought a proper sabot/skirt might enable a .410 slug through a 28 modified. Conversely can a 20 ga. slug be forcibly reduced in OD to the dimension necessary to function in a 28 ga. modified barrel ?  CASTING---- Does anyone make dies for 28 ga. slugs ?   Are there any old ones available. How do cast slugs perform vs swadged ones? Is there any post -casting finishing treatments necessary to improve the cast slugs performance?    Thanks,   Ken Lacey

I make quite a few slug molds, some up to 1600 grains, but only for rifled barrels.

I suggest you check out the above recommendation about Ballistac Products.  They are unknown to me, but I don't make hollow base slug molds, and for smoothbore, I'm convinced they are mandatory for accuracy.  Choke has made no difference my slug use through the years, so far as danger, but it seems that modified or cylinder tubes have shot most accurately.

All the BPI 28ga slugs are round ball with carriers unless some one else see's something I don't. A Dangerouse Game slug would be perfect but there Dangerous game slug is round ball not the pointed slug that I use in my 20ga. Kurt

I live in MN and BP is relatively close. [200 miles] I have narrowed my quest to their ballistician whomI have had a very difficult time pinning down. Now, with al of the recent indicators swinging around even moreso towards them I'm about to push harder. I will report back on progress!   Ken

I find nothing on Dixie darlings other than a bunch of lady softball teams from the south. Are you talking about the tri ball load Dixies? Kody if I have a mold made it will probly be of the same design as the Old Dixie Tusker bullet even though they only made them for the 12ga the design worked and I don't know why they did not stick with it. I may contact James at Dixie and see if they ever did any molds for the 28 to test. Kurt

I did try Dixie and they're not into 28s at all. Right now I'm back 'n forthing with Ballistic Products Inc. I got past their front man and talked to their ballistician, and followed that bup with a generalized email that possiblly got pushed further up the line because everyone else was sick of dealing with me. This fellowsaid the matter had been exhaustively examined and that their 28 round ball got 1700fps, but thanks for asking and keep sending the helpful ideas.  I answerered that I respected the knowledge and expertise they had put into their product but had to wonder why the 28 was the ONLY ga. not available in the Brenneke style and NONE of the others were found as round ball loads. I feel the Brenneke style could even be extruded onto a poly knob-and cushion/seal.       Ken

Some one made 28 ga slugs years ago . I couldn't remember if Dixie had them or not in 28 , sorry . If i run across anything i will pass it on . I have always wanted a 28 slug / buckshot gun for deer hunting . I ended up with a 20 for now but am still looking for an O/U that can have open sights installed that look like they belong and not something just stuck on . I'm thinking a slug that will be stable and can be loaded using a standard shot cup wad would be one way to go . The BP slug would be ok on close shots Buckshot rangs and a few yards more . It will most likely be a custom mold . If you don't mind post what you find its a great topic

Don't forget, I can make you a slug mold, and one in Paradox style isn't the worst thing on earth.  If they are not made longer than bore diameter almost any thing will shoot well out to about 75 yards.  That isn't good, compared to a hollow base of coarse but could satisfy your needs if you want them only for close range use.  Take a look at the post, ' Cut shells for shotguns', which I posted right after answering this the first time.    They are the most stunning thing shotgun can send out to a live target, and accurate in every gun I've tried them in over a 50 year time span! (If the gun will shoot them without breaking the hull.)
