Contender barrel forearm studs
« on: August 01, 2009, 07:14:13 AM »
I recently bought a used 22 Contender barrel for my G2.  I don't have a rifle stock or foreend yet.  I've just noticed that there is only one stud on the barrel for attaching the foreend.  Is this normal?  Pictures on the TC web site and my pistol barrels have two mount points.  Will I need a special foreend?

Thanks
Rob

Yep, for a time TC only put one stand-off on the 21" carbine barrels and made factory forends to fit them.    I sold my butt stock set for them at least 15-20 years ago.   Your only choices for wood if you want a carbine length forend for that barrel is to find an old "one-hole" forend available for sale, modify a later two hole forend, have a custom one made for it OR have a gunsmith change it to the two SO version.   Wasn't a very good setup and one of TC's ideas that I was glad to see discontinued.

Been quite a while Dave, but I'm still thinking they are not in the same place.   You'd have to use the front hole in the two-hole carbine forend, and I think that pulls the forend forward off the frame a little and leaves part of the hing pin exposed.   Again, I'm not sure as its been a long time.   Using a pistol forend leaves you with a much shorter forend, even if it did mount.   Anyway, I did however find a picture of the butt set I had for those single SO carbine barrels (21", I never wanted and so owned any 16").   Note where the hole is located and compare it to a newer carbine forend if you have one (I don't, all of my wood is custom Bullberry), and don't forget the different (longer) SO spacing for carbine forends.

I did some measurements from photos and it looks as though the front mount is about 3/4" forward.  It's annoying that folks sell stuff and don't mention that it has odd-ball characteristics.

Which would verify what I said about bringing the forened forward on the frame and exposing some of the pin.   Thanks for confirming that.

I wouldn't be so quick to cast any stones though Rob.   The seller may not have known the difference just like you didn't know it.   They were not oddball's the years they offered them, they were standard equipment.   Problem is like you most folks have not been been using Contenders for over 40 years like some of us have who bought and used all of the versions and changes in turn as they came along... cheered for some of them and cursed others.    Heck, last 1 SO barrel I bought was a 222 Rem that was being sold as NIB, so I just assumed it was a newer 2 SO barrel.   Seller didn't know the difference, and I didn't think to ask.   Wasn't the sellers fault, it was mine, so I kept it.   I still had the above stock set at the time and could have shot it, but would not go back to using those barrrels by then.   Traded it later to a gent who didn't care it was a 1 SO barrel for a LNIB Winchester Mod 55 no less.   Now there's a real oddball for you... a full size single-shot semi auto 22 rimfire with bottom eject, auto safety and no serial numbers.

I agree, I should have done my homework.  I was not planning on sending it back or making an issue of it.  I've ordered an unfinished stock from High Plains.  I should be able to get things sorted out.

Thanks

??? I've got three older carbine barrels that have only the one forend screw boss and have used the newer(two screw) forends on them for a long time and never knew any difference.  I always assumed the spacing was the same as the front screw.  I'll check when I get home ???.

Thanks Walt.   As I said, I'm trying to pull this up from ancient history in the old brain, so I surely could be wrong.   But it keeps coming up that the forend was pulled forward some on the frame and I just can't shake that memory.

I tried it with the pistol foreend and it does pull too far forward.  The foreend covers about half of the pin.  I don't know if the screws are placed the same on pistol barrels as on rifle barrels.
