What new 223 barrel for an Encore?
« on: August 10, 2009, 07:17:45 AM »
Well,
I'm thinking about buying a barrel in 223 for my TC Encore.  I have a 30-06 barrel, and a 209x50, but find myself needing a 223 barrel.  I'd like to get long range accuracy out of the setup and I load my own ammo.  I like the idea of a longer barrel for the added velocity, but the TC Pro-hunter is a 1 in 12 twist which doesn't help heavier bullets for longer ranges.  Another option is the Bergara barrels mostly because they are a 1 in 10 twist, but smoething just feels questionable about them.
I'd appreciate any suggestions you all might have.

I have been thinking about getting a .223 Bergara Barrel for the exact same reasons you state. I am just trying to decide between a 24" Stainless or a 26" Stainless Bergara Barrel. My 24" Stainless-Steel Bergara .30-06 Barrel arrived today. I haven't went to pick it up yet, just received the call that it is here.

You will see the same mixed reviews on Bergara as you do on TC or any other mass produced barrel.  I am sure that most of them are fine.  If you have needs that mass produced barrels can't meet then there are lots of custom makers out there that surely will be able to.

My 24" Stainless-Steel .30-06 Bergara Barrel arrived today. I inspected it as much as I know how. The crown looks super, and centered with the bore. As much as I could see with a light and magnifying glass the throat looks to be centered with the bore as does the neck area of the chamber. I like the soft matte finish of this barrel also.

In other words if it shoots nearly as good as good as it looks I am going to be a happy camper. I haven't had an opportunity to try it on my Encore Frame as yet as my frame is at my gunsmiths getting a trigger job done on it currently.

What weight bullet?  I shoot a55gr hornady in a pro hunter .223 hornady factory ammo and it’s a tack driver, at 100yd I shoot from rest a ¼ mao group the 1 in 12 seems to work for me. I think I might do better with hand loads but this barrel is deadly!
