Sturgis Bike Week
« on: July 30, 2009, 02:27:52 AM »
Anyone making the pilgrimage to the Holy Mecca of Bikers. I have been invited by several to trailer up but I declined. If I can't ride I won't go. Good thing I didn't take them up on it either as they have all backed out anyway. I have lost the big interest of going after hearing all the stories of the price gouging and cost of just throwing up a tent somewhere. Several local get togethers to hit for a lot less money.
Deer hunting is mostly fun then you shoot one and it turns to work.

Some day maybe. I would stay in Rapid City, great accomodations there. Went last year 2 weeks before the event, to avoid the crowds.

My son rolled thru there last year on the way home from North Dakota the thursday before it started and had a blast. Hit the bars and a lot of the vendors were going. HE had a great time. I may try that instead of the bike week.

Last year me and bro's with our O/Ls coming out of Deadwood headed to Buffalo Chip for concert! First turn starting down canyon had some hot rod idiot on custum hardtail ( I was watching this guy in my mirror swerving in and out of bikes ) came around me hit the bike in front of me rear tire. Needless to say he lost it at about 60 mph we had this guy rolling down road right next to us. I could hear his bones snapping O/L started screaming his bike slid across road into on coming traffic and truck smacked it into a million pieces. We pulled over not a pretty sight took me a good hour to get O/L back on bike. This brought on allot of talk at camp that night about how Sturgis has changed. To many idiots who don't know how to ride but they got them a $40,000.00 custum and this makes them Bikers. We have decided no more Sturgis during bike week hell we been going off and on for 20 years. That being said everyone should go at least once it is truely amazing. The Black Hills is some of the most beautiful scenic country we have rode. Being in our 50s we have decided we like a slower pace with smaller crowds guess were just old farts.

We seen something like that last year. A guy on a sport BMW bike passed us south out of Deadwood at a very high rate of speed, going down hill into a sharp corner. He missed the corner and hit the guard rail at 60+ mph. The bikers ahead of us were paramedics and tended to his injuries. He looked dead to me, but was blinking. No cell service in the bottom of this valley. I turned around and went "quickly" to the top of the hill and called 911. The sharp corner and sign were obvious to us, but not this guy. I drive slower every year.
